FB: 3A C-ville rolls in Sagamore Conference opener at 3A #15 Danville, 38-20

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

DANVILLE – Whether it was offensive perfection or defensive collapse is a matter of perspective. However, one thing is a fact. Crawfordsville’s Class 3A Sagamore Conference attack at No. 15 Danville Aug. 29 was devastatingly swift and deadly.

The Athenians scored on their second play from scrimmage. After four offensive plays, they had scored twice. Still not impressed? Try this one on for size. After nine offensive plays, Crawfordsville had scored three times!

It all added up to a first quarter that Crawfordsville fans will long remember – and Danville fans will spend a long time trying to forget.

Superman made an appearance at the game in the form of Crawfordsville running back Craig Fairley. The first time Fairley touched the ball, he scampered 69 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 Crawfordsville lead. Evidently not satisfied with the scope of that effort, the second time Fairley touched the pigskin he sprinted 82 yards for another score and a 14-0 Athenian margin.

That’s 151 yards in two carries – not a bad start on any night. (Fairley, who finished with 22 carries for 247 yards, spoke with Hoosier Authority after the game – his comments can be seen by clicking here!).

The onslaught continued the third time Crawfordsville gained possession. Five plays into the Athenians’ drive, Brett McKinney hit Brett Linn for a 45-yard touchdown pass and it was 21-0.

Not to be outdone, the Athenian defense contributed to the early devastation by intercepting Danville on each of the Warriors’ first two possessions. At the end of the first period it was 21-0, and the shock was in full force for the large Danville crowd.

Crawfordsville, however, was not through yet. On the Athenians’ fourth stint with the ball, McKinney hit Jordan Boykin with an eight-yard fade route for yet another touchdown.

With 7:04 left in the first half, it was 28-0 Crawfordsville.

The hosts finally settled down and forged a drive that resulted in a one-yard touchdown plunge by quarterback Trent Schaffer to put Danville on the board. The only bad part of that drive was that the Warriors left too much time on the clock.

Crawfordsville needed less than two minutes to strike again. This time McKinney hit Linn with a bubble screen that went 51 yards for a 35-6 halftime lead.

Linn was another incredible story for the Athenians. The senior was playing sick, yet he managed not only to score two touchdowns on the night but also intercept Schaffer and the Warriors three times.

The other question of the evening is whether Danville righted the ship at halftime, or whether Crawfordsville lost some of its edge during intermission.

The third period saw Danville mount a sustained drive, and another one-yard dive by Schaffer cut the lead to 35-14. The drive was aided by several careless Athenian penalties.

Twice in the second half, the Athenians mounted sustained drives of its own. But all they came away with to show for the effort was a 28-yard field goal that pushed the lead to 38-14 early in the fourth quarter.

Danville scored with just over a minute to play on a pass from Schaffer to Justin Gillespie to make the final margin 38-20.

The second half gave the young Warriors something to build on for the rest of the Sagamore schedule. They’ll get their next chance Sept. 5 at Western Boone (1-1), a 28-19 Week 2 upset winner over Clinton Central.

On the other hand, Crawfordsville took center stage in the conference title hunt. The Athenians look to go 2-0 in conference play next Friday at Frankfort (0-2), a 23-7 Week 2 victim of Twin Lakes.

THE PAPER

ATTICA – Normally, Crawfordsville High School senior golfer Stormy Staton has plenty of people following her during her round.

But
Thursday afternoon, Athenians’ coach Darren Haas decided to have
everyone leave the two-time Indiana High School Athletic Association
regional qualifier alone.

Staton fired a school nine-hole record 36 to earn medalist honors and lifted Crawfordsville to a one-stroke triangular meet win.

Crawfordsville finished with a season-low 181, beating Seeger by one stroke and Attica by 27.

Staton broke her own school record of 37, which she set three times last year.

Nearly
all of Crawfordsville’s other golfers fired personal-best rounds,
including freshman Clancy Wolf (49) and sophomores Amber Johnson (49)
and Rebecca Johnson (51).

Sophomore Courtney Hamilton also had a 47 and freshmen Emily Cope added a 53.

Crawfordsville lost to county- and Sagamore Athletic Conference rival North Montgomery by one stroke in Wednesday’s dual meet.

But Staton, who shot a 40, wasn’t going to let that happen again.

“We
left her alone,” Haas said. “Normally she has an entourage watching her
play but (Thursday) I said ‘you’re on your own’. And she said ‘OK.’ I’m
super proud of her . . . She just doesn’t like to lose.”

Crawfordsville next plays at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Western Boone Invitational.

Crawfordsville High School’s girls soccer team is stuck in a mental battle.

For the second straight game, the Athenians’ flat second half cost them a game.

Coach Kim Cullen knows they can fix the problem.

As to when her team will keep the intensity the whole game, she’s still not sure.

Visiting Greencastle scored four second-half goals en route to a 5-1 victory over Crawfordsville.

Crawfordsville
(0-2) had the game tied at 1-1 at the half, thanks to a goal from
sophomore Haley Horner. Junior Alex Gasaway had the assist.

But once again, like they did in a 5-1 loss at McCutcheon last week, they couldn’t keep up that high level of play.

“It’s
all mental,” Cullen said. “I think they’ll get there. We’re a young
team. We stayed back too much and watched the ball. We didn’t put
pressure on (Greencastle). We couldn’t seem to maintain possession in
the second half.”

Crawfordsville next plays Thursday in a 4:30 p.m. game at Sagamore Athletic Conference rival Frankfort.

“I
think our veterans need to step up a little bit and lead the team
more,” Cullen said. “They need to control more of the game.”

BSOC: Crawfordsville Scores Late To Trip Stars

Staff report

What a difference a week can make. Crawfordsville scored a late goal to break a 2-2 tie and went on to defeat Western Boone 3-2 in the season opener for both squads. Last week in the teams’ preseason scrimmage, WeBo had controlled the action for a 3-1 victory.

Sophomore Matt Mummert was the hero for the Athenians. He beat a Star defender and put home the winner with just under 15:00 to play in the contest. Crawfordsville then survived two excellent scoring chances for Western Boone in the final minutes. It was one of two goals on the night for Mummert. Crawfordsville’s other tally came off the foot of Austin Evans.

It was a disappointing loss for the Stars, who enjoyed a 2-1 lead through much of the game. Their goals were scored by Aaron Vaughn and Jordan Moody.

FB: Crawfordsville vs. West Lafayette Preview

From the Paper of Montgomery County
John Groth
Sports Editor

Crawfordsville
High School football coach Rex Ryker promises fans an eye-popping
season-opener against powerhouse West Lafayette.

With two
explosive, powerful veteran-laden offenses they could be in for a
scoring fest Friday night – which doesn’t help the sixth-year coach’s
nerves.

“This game will probably be an exciting one to watch
and a nerve-wracking one to coach,” Ryker said. “Two very good offenses
are going to be on the field.”

Crawfordsville (0-0) travels to West Lafayette (0-0) to open its season at 7 p.m. Friday night.

In each of the Athenians’ last two seasons, they have lost to the Red Devils in their opening game and then started 0-3.

Crawfordsville
entered last year’s season-opener trying to cement its starting
quarterback position, and after the first third of the season, found
junior Jordan Standefer could provide them with some firepower.

But this year, he’ll miss the team’s opener, along with their first four games after violating the school’s athletic code.

Senior Brett McKinney, who last quarterbacked in middle school, will take over.

Although
McKinney will make his first high school start at quarterback, Ryker
acknowledged he’s performed well during practices and in the Athenians’
scrimmage against Sheridan last Saturday.

“(Brett) moved the
offense as well against Sheridan as well as it’s ever moved,” Ryker
said. “He can complete every pass we need him to be able to throw. He’s
shown no limitations.”

Crawfordsville is still working on its
offensive line. With senior offensive lineman Brandon Wise on the mend
(recovering from surgery on his knee) and day-to-day for Friday night,
the Athenians may only have two returning starters back.

But the
most important aspect to Friday’s game will be turnovers.
Crawfordsville had five turnovers in last year’s game, along with four
dropped passes – including two that would have been touchdowns.

“Turnovers will be key,” Ryker said.

GSoc: Athenians lose aggressiveness

From “The Paper of Montgomery County”

LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Coach Kim Cullen liked the Crawfordsville High School girls soccer team’s start.

They played rugged defense, getting after offensive players and outworking them to the ball – for a half.

But when the second half came around, the Athenians lost their energy and tenacity – and then their season-opening game.

Crawfordsville
held McCutcheon to only one goal in the first half but the Mavericks
added four more in the second to score a 5-1 home Monday afternoon
victory.

“In the first half we were aggressive, not letting
(McCutcheon) past the ball and marking the ball. In the second half, we
didn’t do that,” Cullen said. “(McCutcheon) made very dynamic movements
off the ball and was really finding their players. We were starting to
chase balls and then get tired.”

Crawfordsville’s (0-1) lone goal came from junior Alex Gasaway, who scored off a direct kick in the first half.

Athenians’ sophomore goalie Kaitlyn Carey recorded 22 saves.

“This
is probably one of toughest teams we’ll play outside of sectionals,”
Cullen said “We’re a younger team and consistency is key – doing things
right all the time.”

Crawfordsville plays at 5 p.m. next Monday in a home match against Greencastle.

FRANKFORT, Ind. – Crawfordsville High School’s girls golf team pulled out a tight triangular meet win Tuesday afternoon.

Hopefully the victory will propel them into another today.

Crawfordsville senior Stormy Staton fired a 41 and earned medalist honors, as the Athenians hung on for a 208-209 win over Sagamore Athletic Conference rival Frankfort at Frankfort Country Club.

Hamilton Heights had only three golfers and had an incomplete team score.

Besides Staton, sophomore Courtney Hamilton (55), Amber Johnson (56) and Rebecca Johnson (56) each shot rounds in the 50s.

“This is good for psyche of the kids,” Athenians’ coach Darren Haas said. “The bottom girls especially and the Johnson girls battled well. Stormy started with a triple bogey and struggled. We just scored well enough to win.”

Crawfordsville next plays at 4:30 p.m. today in a triangular meet at Harrison Hills Golf Course with Benton Central and Attica.

GG: North Montgomery Swings to Second

From “The Paper of Montgomery County”

ATTICA,
Ind. – Three of North Montgomery High School’s girls golfers shot
personal bests Wednesday afternoon as the Chargers earned a
second-place Attica Invitational finish.

Sagamore Athletic
Conference rival Lebanon won the 18-hole invitational at Harrison Hills
Golf Course, finishing with a 343. North Montgomery had a 402 team
total, followed by conference and county-rival Southmont (416); Seeger
(436); Benton Central (447); and conference and county-rival
Crawfordsville (454). Fountain Central and Attica each had incomplete
teams and scores.

North Montgomery senior Emily Williams (94)
and sophomores Caitlyn White (102) and Samantha McAlister (110) each
recorded personal best scores, while senior Miranda Pettit added a 96.

“I
couldn’t be happier, especially with a difficult course like Harrison
Hills,” Chargers’ coach Kendra Ruemler said. “Miranda needs to work on
her driving a little bit. But I’m pleased so far. They all have lot of
potential and I’m hopeful.”

After winning the Eagle South Putnam
Invitational, Southmont’s team struggled Wednesday. Only one golfer –
Taylor Davis (94) – shot in the 90s.

Crawfordsville’s Stormy
Staton fired an 80 but the other three Athenians’ golfers had rounds in
the 100s. Freshman Clancy Wolf did turn in a personal-best 111 in her
first varsity meet.

Crawfordsville coach Darren Haas said the
Athenians were missing a couple of varsity players but they should be
back when they start play again next week.

FB: Sagamore school preview – Crawfordsville

By Alex Kirby
HoosierAuthority.com

Last season, the
Crawfordsville Athenians used a host of young talent to to win their
last six regular-season games and the sectional opener over West Vigo
before falling 31-14 to familiar conference foe Danville
in Round 2. Faced again with a tough regular-season schedule,
and a very difficult sectional, coach Rex Ryker has a realistic
outlook on what his team has to do.

“Our schedule does not allow for an
easy start,” Ryker said. “We must be ready now.”

Led by juniors Jordan
Standefer at quarterback and running back Craig Fairley, who ran for 1,825 yards last
season as a sophomore, the Athenians offense will be able to light it
up through the air and on the ground. On defense, Brett Linn and Brett
McKinney will hold the opponent’s air attack in check in the secondary.
The defense must replace all linebackers, however, as last year’s starters were
lost to graduation.

The bottom line?

“We have great talent but little depth,” Ryker said. “We must stay healthy.”

If
the Athenians can find a way to keep their key players off the DL, then
the Sagamore Conference championship trophy may end up in
Crawfordsville by season’s end.
