WEST
LAFAYETTE – On December 28th the third-annual Harrison Endurance
Invitational was held at the Purdue University Aquatic Center.  And for
the second time in three years, Brownsburg’s boys swim team won the
title, edging second place West Lafayette 396 to 353. 

The
McCutcheon Mavericks finished third with 325 points.  Frankfort was fourth with 304 points.

The meet which had no diving competition, featured 6
events with longer distances than the swimmers are used to swimming
during a regular high school meet.

However, Brownsburg adapted nicely to the longer distances recording four victories to go along with 13 top five finishes.

“We
had some really fast swims which is promising,” said Brownsburg coach
Josh Saylor. “It’s also kind of nice to do well in a non-traditional
meet like this because you know 50’s and 100’s are different from 100’s
and 200’s.”

Claiming first place finishes for the Bulldogs were:
the 400 yard medley relay team (comprised of Aric Franzman, Nick Fox,
Luke Haynes, and Matt Minkner), Franzman in both the 200 yard butterfly
and 200 yard backstroke, and the 400 yard freestyle relay team
(comprised of Haynes, Andrew Voiles, Eric Waggoner, and Franzman).

Franzman’s time of 2:03.29 in the 200 yard backstroke broke his own meet record by over two seconds.

In addition to Franzman, West Layette’s Raymond Mahon and Seeger’s Casey Schroeder also won two individual events. 

Mahon
set new meet records in both the 200 and 1000 yard freestyle events. 
He came from behind to defeat Frankfort’s Alexander Snyder in the 200
yard free with a new record time of 1:48.80.  Then in the 1000 yard
freestyle, he became the event’s first ever swimmer to record a sub
ten-minute swim with a time of 9:55.74.

Seeger’s Schroeder won
both of the sprint freestyle races.  He recorded a winning time of
22.46 in the 50 yard freestyle and then backed that up with a victory
in the 100 yard freestyle in a time of 50.94.

FOWLER – Poor shooting plagued the Class 3A No. 6 Crawfordsville Athenians in the Holiday Tournament at Benton Central on Friday. The Athenians overcame their shooting woes enroute to a tournament championship by defeating Sagamore Athletic Conference rival Danville 46-36 in the opening round and knocking off host Benton Central 49-42 in the final game.

Crawfordsville sophomore Alex Gasaway scored a game-high 14 points in the championship game and finished with 20 points for the tournament. “All around, Alex had a great game,”
Crawfordsville coach Darren Haas said. “She’ll be the first to tell you that she didn’t play well but, she stepped up when we needed her.”

Benton Central junior Alyshia Harvey led all tournament scorers with 29 points. Harvey netted 22 points in the opening round 60-35 win over Zionsville. Zionsville junior Emily Dixon was second high for the tournament with 23 with 12 points in the loss to BC and 11 points in the consolation win over Danville. Danville was led by senior guard Mak Leath’s 22 tournament points. She fouled out with 15 points in the opening loss to Crawfordsville and started the consolation game by shooting 0-for-8 from the floor through the first three quarters. Leath finished with seven in the second game.

Crawfordsville (13-1) made a 12 point run at the end of the first quarter in game 1 to take the lead over Danville (5-8), 12-6. The Warriors answered with a seven point run of their own to take a 13-12 lead. The Athenians fired back with their own seven point run then nailed three triples to break open a 13 point advantage, 28-15, halfway through the third. Danville would close the gap to two points but, would get no closer.

“At times we will play two minutes of good basketball,” Danville coach Terry Hammons said.
“It’s been that way all year. If we can just get that consistency, it will make us a heck of a lot
better.”

It was more of the same for Danville in the consolation game. The Warriors could only muster three field goals in the first half and trailed 21-10 at halftime. However Danville outscored Zionsville (2-10) 12-6 in the third quarter to stay close. A 9-5 run by Danville brought them to within one point, 31-32 with less than a minute to play. Eagle senior Leah Einterz then hit two free-throws to seal the 34-31 Zionsville win.

In the championship game Crawfordsville senior guard Hannah Fink connected on a three-pointer in the final seconds of the first quarter to give the Athenians a 17-15 lead over Benton Central (9-4). However, Crawfordsville was unable to make a field goal in the second quarter and found themselves on the short end of a 21-18 scoreboard.

Crawfordsville found their high-low game early in the third quarter and took a 29-28 lead with under three minutes to play in the quarter. The Bison then ripped off a six point run to retake the lead.

With under a minute to play Haas called a timeout and challenged his players to play like they were capable.

“I didn’t talk to them through the first part of
that time out,” Haas said. “Then I just told them
that they were better players than this and that they had to figure out how to win this game.”

Junior Mandi Johnson answered the call and tied the game, 35-35, with a leaning three-point play in the lane. The game went back-and-forth from there. A final 10-1 Athenian run ended the host schools chance at a championship on their floor. Gasaway went 3-4 from the free throw line in the last 21 seconds to seal the game.

“I think out of the eight quarters we played, we got eight minutes total of good basketball,” Haas said.

“It’s a testament to these girls that we could not play well and still win a tournament championship.”

The tournament was plagued by poor play as Crawfordsville was the only team to score more field goals than turnovers, that feat coming in the final game. The Athenians also shot just 33.1 percent (31-for-93) for the tournament.

CRAWFORDSVILLE – Funny thing about a one-two punch – it usually takes both of them to knock somebody out. That was the lesson learned Dec. 22 by Class 3A No. 8 North Montgomery in its 76-63 championship game victory over Crawfordsville.

The Chargin’ Chargers feature a great combination in Purdue-bound D.J. Byrd and frontcourt mate A.J. Sutherlin. On this night, Byrd was in top form while Sutherlin struggled. It is no surprise that for most of the night, Crawfordsville loomed large in North Montgomery’s rear view mirror.

When Sutherlin arrived late in the game, however, host North Montgomery surged to victory.

It didn’t start out looking like the Chargers (7-1) would face nearly the challenge that they did. Byrd scored 15 of his game-high (and tournament record-setting) 41 points in an explosive first-quarter barrage. At the first break, North Montgomery enjoyed a comfortable 24-12 lead.

It was in the second quarter that things started to go haywire.

North Montgomery still enjoyed a 32-35 lead three minutes into the stanza when Sutherlin picked up his second foul and headed to the bench for the remainder of the half. From that point forward, the Chargers had difficulty denting the scoreboard.

Byrd’s open looks became fewer and further apart. The Chargers managed only five points in the final five minutes of the quarter, and Crawfordsville (3-5) took full advantage as the Athenians closed the gap to 37-34 at the intermission.

Sometimes it can be difficult to restart the engine after a stall like that, and that’s exactly what North Montgomery experienced at the beginning of the third quarter. Crawfordsville’s Andrew Swan hit a trey to start the action and tie the game at 37.

After another Athenian basket, suddenly North Montgomery was looking uphill. But the Chargin’ Chargers responded like good teams do.

Byrd also responded like great players do: by taking over the action. The 6’5” junior scored 10 points over the remainder of the quarter, and North Montgomery surged back out in front 56-49 at the end of three.

Crawfordsville, it should be noted, didn’t go easily.

The Athenians scored the first bucket of the fourth to cut the margin to five. Although they could not get closer, they did stay within hailing distance until the 4:06 mark. That is when, with the score 64-57 in the Chargers’ favor, both members of the Athenians starting front court fouled out within 20 seconds.

It was the last gasp from a determined squad.

With the C-ville front court on the pine down the stretch, Sutherlin came to life and ended Crawfordsville’s hopes of an upset. He scored 12 points in the quarter (en route to 17 on the night), and the final margin ballooned to 13.

Crawfordsville was led by the sharp-shooting Tylor Whittington, who finished with a hard-earned 25 points.

In the consolation game, Western Boone (6-2) easily prevailed over sluggish Southmont (2-5), 78-53. The Stars were led by the outstanding play of guard Cory MacBeht, who tallied 25 points. Running mate Drew Pearson added 24, and post man Caleb Weber fought through foul trouble to chip in 14.

CRAWFORDSVILLE – Ah, the little things. They drive basketball coaches crazy because they DECIDE GAMES!

A case in point was the Dec. 21 opening game of the Sugar Creek Classic between Crawfordsville and Southmont. This was a hotly contested and generally well-played game that came down to a couple of little things.

The result was a 59-55 Crawfordsville victory at North Montgomery.

Early on, this game was a contest between the effort of Southmont and the efficiency of Crawfordsville. In the first quarter, effort won – barely – as the Mounties held a slim 15-14 lead after one stanza. The Mounties, however, had a big leg up because they were already in the bonus from the foul line.

Crawfordsville used an 8-2 run at the start of the second quarter to take a lead the Athenians would keep until halftime. They were able to do so because Southmont could not take advantage of being at the free throw line throughout the quarter. (There is one of those little things.)

Poor shooting from the stripe and a two-and-a-half-minute drought from the field allowed Crawfordsville to head into intermission with a 28-22 advantage. But an 8-2 run to start the third quarter brought Southmont back to even.

Then another of those little things reared its **** head. An unforced turnover and an ill-advised shot from the Mounties led to back-to-back 3-pointers by Crawfordsville, and the Athenians had regained their six-point cushion at 36-30.

Southmont fought back, however, and ended the quarter in much the same position it had been in after one quarter. The Mounties trailed 43-39, but Crawfordsville had once again placed them in the one-and-bonus with 1:15 left in the third.

It is very much worth noting that one of the main things that was keeping Southmont in the game was its outstanding defensive rebounding. Through three quarters, Crawfordsville had gotten very few second chances on the offensive end.

Southmont continued to battle through the first part of the fourth quarter and, when the Mounties hit back-to-back threes themselves midway through the period, they regained the lead at 47-46. It was short-lived, though, as the Athenians answered with a trey of their own to regain the advantage, 49-47.

From there the battle was on.

Southmont again tied the contest with less than two minutes to play when sophomore Jordan Burkett stripped an Athenian guard off the dribble and headed the other direction for an easy bucket. The play made it 53-all.

From there, those gremlins wearing the “little things” sweatshirts wreaked havoc on the Mounties. With the score tied at 55 and Crawfordsville at the free throw line, the Athenians missed the front end of a one-and-one.

However, for perhaps the only time the entire evening, Southmont failed to block out on the boards. The result was an easy putback bucket and a two-point lead for Crawfordsville.

Southmont would have a chance to tie at the line a few seconds later but failed to connect, and Crawfordsville was just efficient enough at the line in the last minute to seal the four-point victory.

In the end, Southmont coach Dan Chadd can use this game to teach a very valuable lesson to his players. Although they were in the bonus for over half the game, the Mounties managed to shoot only 12 of 25 from the free throw line. Despite dominating the boards for most of the evening, one missed blockout led to the game’s biggest play.
