After
giving up his first home run of the season, Crawfordsville’s senior
pitcher J.D. Rice found himself behind against Sagamore Athletic
Conference rival Lebanon.

However, Rice credits the big hit by
Tigers’ senior Brett Metcalf, as the reason he was able to calm down
and earn the 4-2 victory.

“Giving up the home run actually helped me,” Rice said after the game. “It really made me concentrate more and stay focused.”

After the third-inning home run, Rice went on to shut out the Tigers.

In fact, he struck out the next three Lebanon players in the inning and didn’t give up another hit until the fifth inning.

Class 3A No. 1 Crawfordsville coach John Froedge acknowledged Rice stayed tough.

“J.D.
battled tonight,” Froedge said. “Having J.D. throw into the sixth
inning is big for us. The conditions were not great but he hung tough.”

Lebanon
had upset on the mind, as sophomore pitcher Jacob Shike kept the
Athenians’ offense off-guard most of the game. The righty only gave up
three hits – all singles – to Crawfordsville (12-1, 6-0 SAC).

“Shike pitched a great game,” Froedge said. “He never allowed our offense to get into any kind of a rhythm.”

With the Athenians’ bats not making noise, Crawfordsville turned to playing small ball.

Freshman Caleb Rasmussen had his hand in two of the plays that led to Crawfordsville runs.

It was Rasmussen’s sacrifice bunt that allowed Crawfordsville to take the lead for good in the fourth inning.

And
then he executed a ******* squeeze in the sixth inning, scoring
pitch-runner Evan Raymond giving the Athenians a two-run lead.

“We
are capable of scoring runs in a lot of different ways,” Froedge said.
“A baseball team cannot count on 10 or 12 hits a game. Tonight we
executed and scored when we had to.”

Froedge, whose team has won
several close games this season, said winning close games helps prepare
his team for post season tournament games.

“Winning by scoring
in different ways will payoff for us later on down the road,” Froedge
said. “When you face good pitching in the state tournament you have to
find ways to score and tonight we did.”

With Crawfordsville up 3-2 in the sixth inning, Lebanon’s Shike hit a double chasing Rice out of the game.

Froedge inserted his ace, junior Steven Rice, into the game.

Steven Rice struck out four of the five batters he needed to pick up his third save of the season.

“Our kids have a lot of confidence,” Froedge said. “Tonight we did what we had to do to win the game.”

Lebanon
entered the game with only four upperclassmen as seven players have
been suspended for violation of the school’s athletic policy.

LINDEN
– Montgomery County track coaches were pleased with two things at
Friday night’s Charger Relays – strong efforts and picture-perfect
weather.

The field of 10 teams had ideal conditions to perform
in and several county athletes took advantage of the weather to record
personal bests.

Southmont won five overall events, with all five
coming on the girls side. Crawfordsville won three – all in the boys
meet – and North Montgomery won three, including the co-ed freight
train relay.

Southmont coach Marvin Walters watched his girls team rebound from an ominous start.

The
Mounties had to overcome some early adversity when they lost freshman
Kara Price to a foot injury in her first pole vault attempt of the
evening.

The injury forced Walters to re-arrange his personnel in some of the events.

“We
had to quickly shuffle our athletes after Kara was injured,” Walters
said. “But we had kids step up and do extremely well. Megan Arnold
jumped into two of Kara’s events and we still won them.”

Arnold also ran on Southmont’s winning sprint medley relay (1:55.1), along with Creasy Clauser, Shelby Harris and Allie Norris.

Besides
that relay, the Mounties took the 1,600 (Clauser, Harris, Kylie
Lippencott and Norris, 4:20.7) and the distance medley (Shelby Davis,
Dusty Lawton, Lippencott and Clauser, 10:00.5).

Kyra Burton and Morgan Fouty teamed together to win the high jump competition (9-feet).

Crawfordsville coach Brian Miller said although his girls team has only 11 members, he cannot fault their effort.

“I told the girls I was extremely proud of their effort tonight,” Miller said. “The girls just need numbers.”

But Crawfordsville’s boys had enough numbers to have the most success among their county counterparts.

One Athenian who had a tremendous meet was senior Jordan Boykin.

Boykin was a part of three champion relay teams.

He was a member of the winning 400-meter relay, 800-meter relay and the shuttle hurdle teams.

He
ran on the 800 relay team with Craig Fairley, Trace Cotten and Jim
Shelton and on the 1,600 relay with James Miller, Ronnie Myers and
Dustin McCloud.

Boykin said he enjoys big relay events like the Charger Relays and his school’s Athenian Relays.

“I
like running in big meets like this one,” he said. “You get to see good
competition and it also gives you an idea of some of the other teams
you will see down the road.”

North Montgomery’s boys teams won
two field events – with Ricky Langford and Jake Thomas teaming up to
win the long jump (37-4¾) and Zach Minchin and Matt Riddell taking the
pole vault (19-0).

Just as impressive, the Chargers earned the
co-ed freight train title with Clay Birdsong, Cody Stephens, Marie Long
and Cara McCauley finishing in 54.6 seconds.

“We had several
kids turn in personal bests,” North Montgomery coach Ed Stuffle said.
“We are seeing improvement in our kids and after tonight we are really
pleased with our team.

BA: Crawfordsville win streak stopped by Lafayette Jeff

Staff Report

The school
record 21 game winning streak came to an end this weekend for the
Crawfordsville Athenians. Lafayette Jeff used a five run sixth inning to down
Crawfordsville 8-6 in the Joe Heath Classic in Lafayette.

The winning
rally by the Bronchos was fueled by a hit batter and an Athenian error. Neither
pleased Coach John Froedge who noted after the game that Crawfordsville had
given up more runs than hits in the game and claimed that indicated some
defensive problems.

Despite the
disappointment of ending the winning streak, it didn’t take long for the
Athenians to start another. Crawfordsville bounced back with a convincing 6-1
shellacking of West Lafayette.

Before the bottom of the seventh inning, Crawfordsville senior J.D. Rice made his cousin a promise.

It was his game and he and the Athenians’ defense would finish it off.

J.D. didn’t let him down – and now they’re a part of school history.

Junior
Steven Rice hit a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the seventh, then
his cousin J.D. made a game-ending unassisted double play off a squeeze
to give Crawfordsville a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over West
Lafayette Harrison in the 2009 Joe Heath Baseball Classic.

Crawfordsville
won its 21st-straight game, setting a school record and giving the
Athenians a huge boost heading into today’s two Joe Heath Classic
games.

J.D. acknowledged they’ll remember this wild ending and record-breaking win for a while.

“It
was a great game,” said J.D. Rice, who went 2-for-3 and had the
game-tying RBI in the top of the seventh. “For us to come here and play
seven innings, it’s great preparation for us to have for the end of the
year – just like we had last year.”

Although Crawfordsville
(4-0) wasn’t considered the home team, the Athenians won their
17th-straight game at Crawfordsville. In fact, they haven’t lost at
home in 22 months. The game was moved to Crawfordsville because of the
wet weather.

They’ll continue the Joe Heath Baseball Classic
today, but head to Lafayette’s Loeb Stadium where they’ll face
Lafayette Jeff at 10 a.m. and then West Lafayette at 12:30 p.m.

They’ll also have a momentum surge after pulling out a thrilling last-inning win.

“The
whole reason we got in these two early-season tournaments was to see
good competition,” Crawfordsville coach John Froedge said. “We did
tonight. For this early in the year to have to play all the way will
help us in the future.”

Crawfordsville had led the entire game, until West Lafayette scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 3-2.

But the Athenians staged a seventh-inning rally.

With runners on first and second, they regained the lead on J.D. and Steven’s back-to-back RBI hits in the top of the seventh.

Then, the two cousins pulled together on the defensive end.

With
one out and runners on second and third and Steven struggling for the
second straight inning, West Lafayette senior Rennie Troggio popped up
a bunt to the right side of first base.

J.D. Rice raced over to make the catch, then stopped and paused trying to figure out what to do next.

He looked around and then heard his teammates yelling at him to go to third base.

Both
of West Lafayette’s runners were there and Rice raced over to tag out
senior Josh Burkhalter, who should have been at second.

Rice still had trouble afterward trying to describe the wild ending.

“We
knew there was a chance for a squeeze. I saw [the ball] go up, caught
the ball. Then, I was lost,” J.D. Rice said. “I heard everybody yelling
and saw two guys over on third base and tagged the guy that was
supposed to be on second. It was intense, [down] 3-2 and to come back
and win 4-3.”

Steven Rice pitched all seven innings, throwing more than 100 pitches and Froedge said he was going on fumes at the end.

He recorded 12 strikeouts, walked three batters, allowed three hits, had a wild pitch and hit a batter.

He struck out five of the first six batters he face and eight of the opening 11.

After struggling the final two innings, Steven Rice couldn’t wait for the chance to earn redemption on the offensive end.

“I
hoped I’d get an at-bat,” Steven Rice said. “If we got the lead I
wanted to come back out for the team. I got down but picked us back up.”

Senior Brett Linn and freshman Caleb Rasmussen had two hits each for Crawfordsville.

Junior Tyler Dunk had two of West Lafayette Harrison’s (1-1) three hits. West Lafayette also had nine stolen bases.

WEST LAFAYETTE – There won’t be a long undefeated run for Crawfordsville High School’s softball team this year.

Crawfordsville
struggled defensively, committing five errors and suffered a 3-2
eight-inning loss at West Lafayette on Thursday afternoon.

It’s
a loss that left Athenians'(1-1) coach Brian Norris pretty disappointed
– even if they hadn’t played for a week and a half.

“We didn’t
hit. Their pitcher had nice little change-up that kept us off balance a
little bit,” he said. “I was disappointed with our hitting. We didn’t
hit many balls very hard. We should have done better. The first couple
innings looked like we hadn’t played in a week and a half, which we
hadn’t. I was OK with that and figured we’d get on her. But we didn’t.”

All three of West Lafayette’s (1-0) runs were unearned.

Trailing 2-1 after five innings, the Red Devils scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game.

Then, they won the game with a run in the bottom of the eighth.

The Athenians outhit the Red Devils 4-2, but their errors did them in.

“All
three of West Lafayette’s runs were unearned. That’s really
disappointing,” Norris said. “It wasn’t inexperienced players who made
errors. That’s the disappointing part.”

Junior pitcher Chelsea Day (0-1) took the loss.

Crawfordsville senior Stormy Staton had two RBI, while junior Ariel Hinton scored two runs.

Crawfordsville next plays April 14 in a home Sagamore Athletic Conference game against Tri-West.

Then, they the Athenians travel to Lizton to face the Bruins in an April 16 road game.
