Base: Noblesville blanks 3A #2 Crawfordsville in season opener, 10-0

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
NOBLESVILLE – It might have been opening day March 30, but Noblesville junior Ryan Byrne was in mid-season form. The lanky right-hander threw six shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out six along the way, as unranked Class 4A host Noblesville pounded 3A No. 2 Crawfordsville, 10-0.
The final score at Don Dunker Field belies the tight nature of the game. The Millers erupted for seven runs in the sixth inning against the Athenian bullpen.
Noblesville plated a run in the season’s very first inning, scoring on a ground ball by Derek Asuras. The Millers added two more in the second in handing Crawfordsville senior left-hander Steven Rice his first-ever loss, with the big blow a two-run single by junior infielder Caleb Shore.
Rice, a veteran of Crawfordsville’s state championship team of two years ago who finished 14-0 last season and had a career record of 24-0 coming in, settled down as the game progressed and held the Millers scoreless through the fifth frame. The Athenians threatened in the top of the fifth, putting two runners on base with only one out, but Byrne quickly defused the situation.
The Athenians thought Rice, who pitched five innings and allowed four hits and three runs while striking out eight, had thrown enough and turned to the bullpen in the fateful sixth. It proved to be unsuccessful as Noblesville dented the plate seven times.
“It could have been scoreless through five,” Crawfordsville coach John Froedge told thepaper24-7.com. “We definitely contributed to their first three runs. We will use every experience to get better – we definitely know where we need to get better.
“Noblesville was definitely more polished tonight than we were.”
First baseman Jameison Brock started the sixth-inning outburst with a two-RBI single and was immediately followed by catcher Sam Wides, who lofted a drive over the left-field fence for a two-run homer.
Andrew Rodgers also had a stellar outing for Noblesville, going 3 for 4 with a double, two RBIs, and three stolen bases.
“It’s a great way to get started,” Noblesville coach Justin Keever told the Noblesville Times. “I just thought our guys played with a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of passion and weren’t afraid to make mistakes.”
Hoosier Authority spoke with Byrne, the winning pitcher, after the stellar effort (see video player).
Crawfordsville’s hits came from Austin Evans, Chris Minks, A.J. Ehrlich, and Rice.
Next up for Noblesville is its first out-of-state trip April 3 against Cincinnati Moeller (OH) and Strongsville (OH).

4A #3 Westfield blanks Carmel, 5-0
Also on March 30, perennial 4A power Carmel (1-1) lost to 4A third-ranked ranked Westfield (2-0), 5-0.
Matt Hammel got the win in giving up just four hits while striking out 11 and walking one for Westfield (2-0), the defending 4A state runner-up which opened its season the day before with a 19-6 five-inning beatdown of 2A No. 7 Heritage Christian. Carmel senior Beau Bowen pitched 5 1/3 innings and surrendered seven hits and five runs in taking the loss for the Greyhounds (1-1), who opened with a 4-2 win over Hamilton Heights.
Carmel was led at the plate by senior outfielder Conrad Gregor, a Vanderbilt recruit, with a 2-for-3 performance.

DANVILLE - With Crawfordsville's boys basketball team mounting a second-half comeback, Travis Carroll took care of it.

Danville's 6-foot, 10-inch senior center put on a scoring display with some down-low style.

A
Purdue recruit, Carroll scored a game-high 27 points - including 19 in
the second half - in Class 3A No. 1 Danville's 65-51 first-round IHSAA
Sectional 25 victory over Crawfordsville.

After being held to
just eight points in the first half, Carroll scored 10 of Danville's 13
points in the third quarter and added another nine in the fourth.

His play left second-year Crawfordsville coach John Blackwell impressed.

"We
gave [Carroll] too many opportunities to score by himself. We knew we'd
have to help. Sometimes we were late with our help and not aggressive
with our help," Blackwell said. "It seemed like he became harder to
guard the deeper the game got. That just shows how good he is. He's
just so consistent. You can't rattle him. He never tries to do too
much. He just goes about his business."

Danville (21-1)
advances to Friday's IHSAA Sectional 25 semifinals to play Sagamore
Athletic Conference rival Western Boone (9-11). Lebanon (12-9), who
beat Southmont 79-69 on Tuesday, will play conference foe North
Montgomery (10-10) in the second semifinal game.

Crawfordsville
(11-10) finished with its second-straight winning season during
Blackwell's tenure. It's the first time the Athenians have accomplished
that feat since they had three consecutive winning seasons from
1996-98.

After losing to Danville by 34 points less than two
weeks ago, the Athenians gave the Warriors a much closer game Tuesday
night.

They stayed patient with their offense, committed fewer
turnovers (11) and kept themselves in the game. Danville led just 27-21
at halftime and Crawfordsville looked like it was in striking distance.

But two Warriors' runs - one to start the third quarter and
another to open the fourth - curtailed the Athenians chances. Carroll
played key parts in both.

Danville started the third quarter on
a 9-2 run to move lead to 36-23 with 4:36 to play in the period.
Carroll scored six of the nine points during that stretch.

Five
minutes later, Crawfordsville had rallied back again. This time, the
Athenians cut the Warriors lead down to 40-35 with 7:24 left in the
fourth.

Carroll went back to work. He led Danville on an 8-0
run, scoring the first two baskets and recording an assist on the third
one. That put the Warriors up 48-35 with 5:57 remaining and the
Athenians could only got as close as nine the rest of the way.

"Welcome
to sectional basketball," Danville coach Brian Barber said. "We did a
good job reversing the ball. [Travis] kept working the ball, which is
what he's got to do."

Crawfordsville sophomore Caleb Rasmussen
led the Athenians with 23 points, hitting 7-of-11 field goals and
7-of-8 free-throw attempts. Junior Trent Crabtree finished with 10
points, while senior Nolan Harris added nine off the bench.

For Danville, senior Jordan Weidner finished with 17 points - 13 coming in the first half. Senior Michael Humphrey added 12.

Crawfordsville
will graduate five seniors - Luke Wren, Kyle Blankenbeckler, James
Miller, Jason Donahue and Harris - who played integral parts on this
year's team.

The Athenians came close to the perfect game that Blackwell wanted Tuesday night. But he admitted they weren't flawless enough.

"That's
what [Danville] will do to you," Blackwell said. "It's like I told you
earlier in the season. Whoever beats them was never going to play
catch-up. I would've loved to have been wrong."
