Staff report
What a difference a week can make. Crawfordsville scored a late goal to break a 2-2 tie and went on to defeat Western Boone 3-2 in the season opener for both squads. Last week in the teams’ preseason scrimmage, WeBo had controlled the action for a 3-1 victory.
Sophomore Matt Mummert was the hero for the Athenians. He beat a Star defender and put home the winner with just under 15:00 to play in the contest. Crawfordsville then survived two excellent scoring chances for Western Boone in the final minutes. It was one of two goals on the night for Mummert. Crawfordsville’s other tally came off the foot of Austin Evans.
It was a disappointing loss for the Stars, who enjoyed a 2-1 lead through much of the game. Their goals were scored by Aaron Vaughn and Jordan Moody.
