THE PAPER

ATTICA – Normally, Crawfordsville High School senior golfer Stormy Staton has plenty of people following her during her round.

But
Thursday afternoon, Athenians’ coach Darren Haas decided to have
everyone leave the two-time Indiana High School Athletic Association
regional qualifier alone.

Staton fired a school nine-hole record 36 to earn medalist honors and lifted Crawfordsville to a one-stroke triangular meet win.

Crawfordsville finished with a season-low 181, beating Seeger by one stroke and Attica by 27.

Staton broke her own school record of 37, which she set three times last year.

Nearly
all of Crawfordsville’s other golfers fired personal-best rounds,
including freshman Clancy Wolf (49) and sophomores Amber Johnson (49)
and Rebecca Johnson (51).

Sophomore Courtney Hamilton also had a 47 and freshmen Emily Cope added a 53.

Crawfordsville lost to county- and Sagamore Athletic Conference rival North Montgomery by one stroke in Wednesday’s dual meet.

But Staton, who shot a 40, wasn’t going to let that happen again.

“We
left her alone,” Haas said. “Normally she has an entourage watching her
play but (Thursday) I said ‘you’re on your own’. And she said ‘OK.’ I’m
super proud of her . . . She just doesn’t like to lose.”

Crawfordsville next plays at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Western Boone Invitational.
