GREENCASTLE – Crawfordsville High School’s three senior pitchers showed they’ve got some heat.

Although
the Athenians didn’t come anywhere close to scoring double-digit runs
Saturday afternoon, their pitching staff shut down Greencastle en route
to their 11th -straight win.

Cameron Hobson, Andrew Swart and
Cody Dowell struck out a combined 14 batters as visiting Class 3A
co-No. 3 Crawfordsville picked up a 2-0 win against Greencastle.

Hobson
(2-0) struck out 11 batters in five innings, while Dowell struck out
one in 2/3 of an inning and Swart recorded two strikeouts in 1 1/3
innings.

Greencastle outhit Crawfordsville 6-4 but the Athenians found ways to get their runners home.

Junior Brett Linn had an RBI, a hit and a run scored, while junior Scott Hunt also had an RBI and a a hit.

Crawfordsville
next plays at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Sagamore Athletic Conference rival
Danville, then travels to Danville for a Thursday rematch.

In the Athenians’ junior varsity game against Danville (Ill.), A.J. Ehrlich pitched a no- hitter in an 11-0 win.

Crawfordsville
High School sophomore Chelsea Day gave the Athenians quite a lift.

After
throwing a no-hitter last week, the Athenians’ pitcher prominently displayed her
power Monday night.

Her home run blast kept Crawfordsville’s record
perfect – and pushed the Athenians to their 11th-straight win.

Day’s
two-run home run in the second inning helped the Athenians to a 5-2 victory over
visiting Turkey Run.

She hit the home run to straight-away centerfield
and finished with two RBI and two runs scored. Day also earned the win, moving
her record to 5-0.

Crawfordsville coach Brian Norris said the home run
ignited the Athenians. One batter later, junior Elizabeth Zachary crushed a
line-drive double over the centerfielders’ head. The Athenians (11-0) also
capitalized off five Warriors’ errors.

“With those two or three pitches
right there, we hit both balls really hard. It helped us get going a little
bit,” Norris said.

Crawfordsville plays at 6:30 p.m. today at Sagamore
Athletic Conference rival Lebanon.

Norris hopes the Athenians can
improve their hitting – they only had five hits, including two by sophomore
Marissa French, Monday night.

He’s not disappointed, he just thinks it
could be better.

“We have to get back to base hits and RBI,” he said.
“It makes things a lot easier

THE
PAPER

NEW
MARKET – Southmont High School baseball coach Adam Acton finally watched the
Mounties’ offense connect.

They just needed to return to their home
confines for their offense to start up again.

Southmont recorded 13 hits
in two games and swept a doubleheader against visiting Cloverdale, cruising to a
17-7 five-inning win in game one and earning a 5-1 victory in game two.

After recording only two hits in Thursday’s Sagamore Athletic Conference
win, Southmont (5-2) nearly quintupled that total in Saturday’s first
game.

Trailing 5-0 after three innings, the Mounties’ offense found their
rhythm – and erupted for a season-high 16 runs in the fourth inning. It’s the
most runs Southmont has scored in an inning this season and was two more than
they had scored in their previous two games.

Southmont batted around the
order three times and eight players – junior Colt Hill, Kyle McMurry, Jared
Earle, Cody Jacquez, Scott Paris, Derek Linn, Jordon Hockersmith and sophomores
Logan Petry – scored two runs apiece.

Earle had three hits, including a
double, and had two RBI. Colt Hill, Jacquez and Hockersmith each had two RBI.

Senior Tyler Price and Tanner Hill each hit doubles.

Tanner Hill
(1-0) pitched and earned his first victory.

Southmont kept up its hot
offense in the second game, scoring four runs in the first inning en route to
the win. Earle had a single and an RBI.

Scott Harris earned the win for
the Mounties.

“We finally got more than just a couple hits in a game,”
Acton said. “Hopefully it’s a confidence builder for next week and we can take
what we’ve done here. We’ve been down in a lot of ballgames and come back. We’ve
lost a couple . . . I’m proud about the team not quitting and not giving up. We
did it again down 5-0. Scoring 16 runs in an inning is rather
unusual.”

Southmont next plays in a home game at 6 p.m. Tuesday against
conference rival Western Boone.

WEST
LAFAYETTE – Instead of stealing bases, Crawfordsville High School’s top-5 ranked
baseball team stole an extra-inning win Saturday afternoon.

Thanks to a
four-run eighth inning and stellar pitching by senior Andrew Swart, the Class 3A
No. 4 Athenians won their seventh consecutive game.

Visiting
Crawfordsville junior Brett Linn had three hits and scored two runs in the
Athenians’ 5-1 eight-inning win Saturday against West
Lafayette.

Crawfordsville’s (9-2) ace Swart threw 6 1/3 innings, allowing
only one unearned run and striking out eight batters.

After serving a
10-game suspension from violating the school’s athletic code during the winter
sports season, senior Cameron Hobson made his return to the line-up.

He
went 1-for-2 as a pinch hitter, including hitting a leadoff single to start the
Athenians’ four-run eighth inning.

Junior Scott Hunt and senior Cody
Dowell each had RBIs. Steven Rice pitched the last 1 2/3 innings and earned his
first win.

“This was a good win for our program against a competitive
team,” Crawfordsville coach John Froedge said in an e-mail.

Crawfordsville next plays at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday against Sagamore Athletic
Conference rival Lebanon.

SB: Crawfordsville Pitchers Hurl Back To Back No-Hitters

Mike McGraw
Hoosier Authority

This is starting to get monotanous. That is, unless you are
a fan of Crawfordsville softball. The Athenians have thrown back to back
no-hitters. Monday it was Chelsea Day against Seeger. Tuesday it was Stormy
Staton versus conference foe Western Boone. The Athenians downed the Stars 8-0
behind Staton’s effort on the mound.

Crawfordsville used a four run second inning to take a lead
they would never relinquish. The Athenians batted around in the inning, scoring
the runs without benefit of an extra base hit.

The victory keeps Crawfordsville undefeated on the season at
8-0, and improved their Sagamore Conference record to 5-0.

Crawfordsville Softball Remains Undefeated

Mike McGraw
Hoosier Authority

Crawfordsville’s softball team maintained its perfect slate Friday
with a 3-2 victory over visiting Greencastle. The win improved the Athenians to
6-0 on the season. In the process, the Athenians received a major bonus.

Sophomore Marrisa French took the mound for her first start
of the season, and was strong throughout. The Tiger Cubs plated one run in the
first inning, but after that French was able to work herself out of any trouble
she encountered.

Crawfordsville gained the lead on the strength of a two run
third inning. It was during that rally that French learned one of the cardinal
rules of pitching—-help yourself with the bat! She did just that with an RBI
double during the rally.

The Athenians put their streak on the line Saturday with a
date at Fountain Central.

BA: Crawfordsville Opens League Play By Downing Tri-West

Mike McGraw
Hoosier Authority

At this rate, Crawfordsville baseball coach John Froedge won’t
need to worry about wearing out the arms of his pitchers. It has taken the
Athenians only five innings to dispose of each of their last three opponents.
The latest victim was Sagamore Conference foe Tri-West. Crawfordsville blasted
the Bruins 11-1 Tuesday evening. The victory moves the Athenians to 5-2 on the
season and 1-0 in conference play.

Senior right-hander Andrew Swart held the Bruins in check to
pick up his third win of the season. The deciding inning came in the third when
the Athenians plated six runs to take a 9-0 lead. Swart was responsible for
putting the game under the ten run rule with a fifth inning double. Tyler Smith
took the loss for Tri-West.

Blake Harris and Justin Wright were the big hitters for
Crawfordsville on this night. Both went 2 for 3, and Wright included 2 RBIs in
his assault. However, the interesting aspect of Crawfordsville’s night on
offense was that the Athenians stole six bases in five innings. That weapon
displayed by a team everybody already knows has strong pitching is borderline
scary.

Tri-West remains winless on the season at 0-3 and fell to
0-1 in league play.

SB: Crawfordsville Crushes Tri-West

John Groth
Sports Editor
Paper of Montgomery County

LIZTON
– No way Brian Norris expected this kind of offensive onslaught.

With
three varsity senior starters gone for Spring Break this week, the
Crawfordsville High School softball coach hoped to escape with a Sagamore
Athletic Conference road win.

They like those close games with conference
foe Tri-West.

But in the final inning of Tuesday afternoon’s game, the
Athenians shook up the Bruins with a scoring blitz.

Visiting
Crawfordsville scored 11 runs in the top of the seventh inning and blew open a
tight game in a 15-2 victory over conference rival Tri-West.

“I would’ve
been happy with (a) 4-1 or 5-1 (victory),” Norris said. “We left so many runners
on base in the first two or three innings, I wasn’t sure what was going to
happen.”

Crawfordsville (5-0, 3-0 SAC) opened conference road play with a
bang.

Despite being without three senior starters – Haley Fink, Hannah
Fink and Alex Brock – the Athenians racked up 18 total hits, six extra-base hits
and five stolen bases.

And they’re replacements proved to be just
fine.

Sophomore Sandy Williams went 2-for-5, recording both her hits in
the final inning.

She hit a two-RBI double that put the Athenians up 8-1
and added an RBI single later in the inning which scored their last
run.

Sophomore Haley Grundy went 1-for-3 but reached base three times.

She walked in the second inning, hit a double in the sixth inning and
reached on an error in the seventh. She also stole a base and scored a
run.

Sophomore Kylie Justus went 1-for-5, hitting an infield single in
that run-filled seventh inning.

“In their first varsity games, that was
huge,” Norris said. “I was hoping they’d come up with some quality hits in the
batting order. They came through, hit the ball and put it in
play.”

Crawfordsville did most of its damage in the final inning –
sending 17 batters to the plate, recorded 11 hits and scored 11 runs in the top
of the inning, sending Tri-West and senior standout pitcher Lacie Woodall into a
tailspin.

Woodall took the loss, striking out nine batters (six in the
first three innings) and walking four. She had trouble with control problems,
missing way outside with balls – especially in the seventh inning.

She
allowed 10 runs in the seventh inning and couldn’t produce an out before being
replaced by sophomore Ashley Myers.

Crawfordsville senior Sarah Williams
connected on a single to right field to start the seventh inning, then hit a
three-RBI triple later in the inning. She finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and
two runs scored, acknowledging they picked up on Woodall’s speed.

“We
got onto (Lacie’s) speed and started to just hit off her,” Sarah Williams said.
“At the beginning, we didn’t hit off her because we’re not used to faster
pitchers.”

The game also marked the first time both Williams sisters have
played on the field at the same time, with Sarah Williams in center field and
Sandy Williams at second base.

Sarah would even give Sandy some advice on
where to position herself during the game.

“(Sandy) filled in at second
base like she’s always wanted,” Sarah Williams said. “Coach (Norris) gave her a
chance. I though she did pretty well.”

Juniors Elizabeth Zachary and
Stormy Staton also had their third-straight strong games.

Zachary went
3-for-5 with two doubles, including a two-RBI double in the top of the third.
Staton pitched all seven innings and earned the win, striking out seven and
walking only one batter.

Crawfordsville will face Tri-West in a 5 p.m.
home game Thursday, then play Greencastle on Friday and Fountain Central on
Saturday.

That’s why Norris said this game was so key to their week.

“The girls will be more relaxed,” he said. “That’s for us this week
since we have three more games. It’s good for them to get their feet wet and
good to get a win and get their feet wet.”

SB: Crawfordsville Holds On To Sweep Frankfort

 John Groth
Sport Editor
Paper of Montgomery County

Opposing
runners better not test Crawfordsville High School catcher Elizabeth
Zachary.

She’s been working on a quicker release – and the Athenians’
junior provided some game-saving heroics with her quick trigger arm Wednesday
night.

Zachary hit a two-RBI triple in the top of the sixth inning, then
threw out a runner in the bottom of the seventh inning to help Crawfordsville
hold on for an 8-7 victory – and series sweep – over conference rival Frankfort.
Crawfordsville won the first game 5-1.

“This year, I’ve been working on
really getting up and then throwing faster,” said Zachary, who threw out three
runners in the doubleheader sweep Wednesday. “I stood up a little too much and
the ball went high on that (seventh-inning) throw. I didn’t mean to
though.”

Crawfordsville (4-0) survived – and kept its undefeated record
and now-perfect conference record intact.

After jumping out to a 5-0 lead
in the first inning, the Athenians watched as the Hot Dogs chipped away, scoring
runs in the first, second and fourth innings to tie the game at 5-5 and then
take the lead.

Sophomore Chelsea Day struggled with her control in the
cold – throwing seven wild pitches and issuing 11 walks.

But thanks to
Zachary and sophomore pitcher Marissa French’s late-inning performance, they
hung on.

With two outs and two runners on base in the top of the sixth
inning, Zachary drilled a two-RBI triple to leftfield, giving the Athenians an
8-5 cushion. It was just enough.

Frankfort rallied for a run in the
bottom of the fifth and then scored one more with no outs in the bottom of the
sixth.

That’s when Crawfordsville coach Brian Norris took out Day and
put in French.

French fended off a cold and then gave up an RBI single,
before striking out the final three batters in the sixth inning.

And in
the seventh, she got some defensive help – with a line-drive catch by senior
Haley Fink at second base and a dig and scoop by junior Stormy Staton at first
base for the final out of the game.

“I just thought ‘I’ve got to focus,”
French said. “I had to get strikes and I had to push myself. I put my sickness
aside and I just pitched.”

In the opening game, Staton turned in a
dominating pitching performance to earn her first home win.

She struck
out 10 Hot Dogs and pitched a one-hitter in a 5-1 victory, giving up her lone
hit and run – an RBI single to Frankfort freshman Caitlyn Pearcy – in the top of
the first inning.

After allowing that run, Staton (2-0) shut Frankfort
down. She allowed just three bases runners the next six innings (all who reached
on errors).

“Anytime someone gets a hit, scores a run or I give up a
walk, it tells me that I need to start doing something quick,” Staton said. “It
gets me going.”

Staton also received some defensive help from Zachary.

Zachary threw out two runners – freshman Cara Conklin at second base to
end the top of the fourth inning and pitcher Brittany Leach at third base in the
top of the sixth inning.

Crawfordsville benefited from four Frankfort
errors, scoring four of its five runs off errors. The Athenians next play
Tuesday at conference rival Tri-West.
