GBB: Benton Central Hands Crawfordsville First Loss Of Season

Hoosier Authority

Skyler Gick led 3A #7 Benton
Central to a come from behind 66-60 victory over 3A #4 Crawfordsville in the
Zionsville Invitational by scoring 15 fourth quarter points. She is a great
player and that is what great players do. The headlines from this story will
gravitate n that direction because that is what headlines do. However, it was
two of Gick’s lesser known mates. Hillary Wood and Emily Sheets, that swung the
momentum in a game that was all about momentum. This was a tale of two halves,
or more accurately, a tale of 20 minutes and 12 minutes.

Simply stated, Crawfordsville played perhaps their best half
of basketball all season in racing to a 36-25 lead at intermission. The
Athenians’ talented front line of Alex Gasaway, Mandi Johnson, and Betty Elliot
dominated play. They scored at will in the paint and those shots which did not
go in the first time; they just went after and put in on the second try.
Lethally efficient point guard Lexi Stevens calmly handled Benton Central’s
pressure defenses and controlled tempo with her usual steady hand. A 12-0 run
midway through the first quarter put Crawfordsville ahead 18-9 and the only
remaining question was whether the Bison could make it to halftime still within
hailing distance.

They did, but just barely. Gick was held to eight first half
points and Benton Central seemed to have no answer for Crawfordsville’s
powerful inside attack.

After scoring the first basket of the third stanza, Crawfordsville
went five possessions without denting the scoreboard and Benton central closed to within 38-31.
However, the Athenians responded with a 6-0 run and seemingly led comfortably,
44-31, midway through the period. That is when the momentum began to sway in
favor of the Bison.

It started with the play of Wood, who suddenly began to
assert herself on the boards. She successfully limited Crawfordsville’s second
chance opportunities and points became a little harder to come by for the
Athenians. Still, the lead was 46-37 in the waning seconds of the quarter.
Enter Emily Sheets. The diminutive guard drained a long range three pointer at
the buzzer to cut the lead to six at the end of three periods. The effect of that
dagger was tangible in the gym even before the fourth quarter began.

Benton Central looked energized as the final eight minutes
began and despite an opening possession turnover, quickly cut the lead to 52-49
on two free throws from Sheets. Those charity tosses began a 14-2 Bison run
capped by a Gick steal from Stevens that was an emotional blast to the
Athenians. The final blow came with the score 62-57 and slightly over two
minutes to play. The Bison missed both of a two shot foul but a fumbled rebound
returned possession to Benton Central and resulted in two more free throws
which Gick calmly sank.

Crawfordsville did not die quietly. The Athenians drained a
three pointer to close within 64-60, but Benton Central kept the ball in Gick’s
hands and successfully ran out the clock.

BB: Weekend Action Leaves North Montgomery, Danville On Top Of Sagamore Standings

Mike Mcgraw

Hoosier Authority

Sagamore Conference basketball reached the Christmas break
exactly where most people thought it would be, with Danville and North
Montgomery on top of the standings. Both the Warriors and Chargers picked up
league wins over the weekend and now stand at 3-0 in conference play. If you
are looking for a surprise, look no further than Lebanon where the Tigers are
growling once more. They sit third despite a loss to Danville on Friday night. Here is a look at
the action from over the weekend.

North Montgomery downed Crawfordsville 66-53 Friday evening
to once again claim the Montgomery
County
mythical title.
The Chargers then celebrated Saturday by mauling Covington 72-48. D.J. Byrd continued to shoot
left handed most of the time and it posed serious problems—for Covington. Byrd scored 23
points on 10 of 12 shooting in the game. Colin Maltsberger added 17 markers for
the Chargers. Meanwhile, Crawfordsville rebounded from Friday’s loss by
rallying late to down highly regarded Seeger 64-55. The Athenians were led by
the 18 points of Trent Crabtree.

Danville kept pace by
defeating Lebanon
57-53 Friday night to improve to 3-0 in the league and hand the Tigers their
first conference loss. Brian Barber’s crew then dismantled Plainfield on Saturday, 67-51. Lebanon
salvaged the weekend by destroying Indianapolis Manual 55-35. The Tigers are
unquestionably the most improved team in the SAC.

The rest of the league action was on Saturday night. Frankfort served notice
that they are still to be dealt with this season. The Hot Dogs slipped past
Western 60-57. A three pointer from Steve Loveless broke a 55 all tie late in
the fourth quarter. Loveless finished with 19 points and Troy Porter added 13
markers. Western Boone had little trouble improving to 3-3, crushing Fountain
Central 50-33. However, the Stars hit the break still looking for their first
conference victory.

Things did not go so well for Southmont and Tri-West. The
Mounties were upset by North Vermillion 65-59 despite 18 point from Cody VanScoyoc.
Look no further than 12 of 29 free throw shooting for a cause. Tri-West
stumbled out of the blocks at Cloverdale, trailing 21-10 at the end of the
first quarter. The Bruins controlled much of the remainder of the game, but it
was not enough. The Clovers claimed a 63-59 upset victory.

Crawfordsville’s junior class took over the pool in waves.

Victoria Fairfield, Missy Robinson and Becca Howland kept the Athenians’ Montgomery County meet streak safe.

No matter what event the trio of girls swam, it always ended with the same outcome – a win.

Robinson
won her first individual county meet titles and set a county-meet and
pool record, Fairfield won two individual events for the second
consecutive year and Crawfordsville’s girls swim team splashed their
way to an eighth-straight county championship Saturday afternoon.

Crawfordsville
won eight of 12 events and scored 287 points to capture this year’s
girls swimming title at Crawfordsville High School. North Montgomery
(204) finished second with Southmont (187) was third.

“They’re
a great group,” Crawfordsville coach Mark Hesse said. “To see Victoria
win her [200-yard freestyle] race at the beginning and they want to get
their opportunity. Missy and Becca swam great.”

With her
victories in the 200 freestyle (2:05.54) and 100 butterfly (1:00.55),
Fairfield now has four individual county titles and seven titles
overall, including relays, in the past two years.

This year,
she swam on the Crawfordsville’s winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle
relays along with earning wins in both of her individual events.

Heading into Saturday’s meet, Robinson had a resume of significant accomplishments.

But the Indiana High School Athletic Association State and U.S. Junior Nationals qualifier had never captured a county title.

She
took care of that with a 100 freestyle victory (56.07 seconds) and then
added another – the 100 breaststroke – setting a county meet and pool
record in the event for good measure.

Robinson finished the
100 breaststroke in 1:05.86, breaking her own pool record set in 2008
by .32 seconds and the county record by more than one and a half
seconds set in 2007 by North Montgomery’s Emily McIlrath.

Considering she injured one of her shoulders weightlifting earlier in the week, Robinson was in good spirits.

“I
really wanted the 100 freestyle [record], too,” said Robinson, who also
swam on the first-place 200 and 400 freestyle relays. “I should have
been faster. It’s pretty good considering where I was earlier in the
week.”

Howland also defended her county title in the 500
freestyle, finishing in 5:42.60, just over half a second better than
her seed time, and senior Bekah Simmons won the diving competition.

Meanwhile,
Southmont senior Hilary Mishler had another impressive meet – breaking
a county meet record for the third-consecutive year.

After two
years of setting new 50 freestyle records, Mishler broke the 100
backstroke record, finishing the event in 58.79 seconds and shattering
former Southmont swimmer Brittany Sayler’s record set in 2002
(1:00.05).

Mishler also won the 200 individual medley, taking it in 2:13.91. Both swims were lifetime bests.

“We’re
pretty happy with that,” Southmont coach Kevin Hedrick said. “She’s
working hard and we expect her to continue to get faster through the
year.”

North Montgomery had only one county champion – senior Emily McIlrath.

Although
she didn’t break the school record like she had hoped, she moved
closer, finishing in 25.64 seconds. She’s less than a half second off
the Chargers’ all-time record.

North Montgomery coach John Walker said McIlrath, along with the other Chargers’ swimmers, need to work on their endurance.

“We need to get stronger and develop more endurance and speed at the end of races,” he said.

GBB: 3A #4 Crawfordsville Remains Undefeated By Trouncing North Montgomery

Mike McGraw

Hoosier Authority

Last year, Crawfordsville won a lot of games early and
established themselves as one of the best 3A teams in the state. However, as
the season progressed, they simply didn’t get any better. By the end of the
year they were playing tight and eventually lost in the sectional. Once again,
the Athenians have reached the midway point of the season running on all cylinders.
After thrashing north Montgomery
Friday night 62-41, Crawfordsville stands 10-0 and ranked $4 in 3A. The bad
news for opponents is that this time around the Athenians are improving nearly
every time out. There is a bit of a chip on their shoulder and they wear it
with pride.

Friday night was a great example of the change in dynamic.
The Athenians raced to a 31-18 lead at intermission. After the break, they were
a bit flat and North Montgomery quickly closed
to within 33-24. Last season this might have been the start of a second half
struggle. Friday, Alex Gasaway responded to the challenge by scoring a bucket
inside and Lexi Stevens then stole the inbounds pass and created an old
fashioned three point play. Suddenly, it was 38-24 and the Athenians were never
headed again.

Despite being comfortably ahead, Crawfordsville gave one
more indication they have developed the needed ****** instinct. Leading 44-32
at the end of three quarters, the Athenians started the fourth period with a
16-0 run that was swift, impressive, and completely deadly. They coasted to the
62-41 final.

Crawfordsville is always led by senior point guard Lexi
Stevens. Friday, she led them in the scoring column with 19 points. Gasaway
added 17 and Mandy Johnson chipped in with 12 markers. The Athenians now
prepare for a big challenge over the holidays. They will compete in the
Zionsville Invitational on January 3rd, facing Skyler Gick and her Benton central Bison in
the first round. After the North Montgomery
game, Coach Darrin Haas spoke about the change in attitude with this Athenian
team. His comments are in the video player on this page.

BB: Byrd goes portside in North Montgomery’s 66-53 win vs. Crawfordsville

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

CRAWFORDSVILLE – Purdue-bound D.J. Byrd has an injured ring finger on his shooting hand. The result is that North Montgomery’s 66-53 victory Dec. 19 over Crawfordsville was a case of addition by subtraction.

The supposed loss of Byrd’s explosive offensive talents caused his Charger teammates to step up in the manner people had been waiting for. Byrd’s inability to shoot his normal long-range jumpers led to fewer questionable shots.

In fact, his shot selection was impeccable. In the end, one less finger went a long way to producing one additional win for the hosts.

By the way, if you are wondering just how much Byrd’s output was affected by the injured digit, try this on for size. He scored a game-high 27 points – shooting left-handed most of the evening. He went 11 of 15 from the charity stripe, shooting southpaw.

In other words, he still dominated the Sagamore Conference showdown.

Crawfordsville stayed close through most of the first quarter. But a 10-0 run by the Chargers at the end of the period led to a 17-7 advantage at the first stop.

Honestly, that margin was due as much to the Athenians’ poor shooting as it was to anything North Montgomery (4-2 overall, 3-0 Sagamore) did. It wasn’t until the second stanza, you see, that Byrd and his mates really began to click.

In a four-possession stretch midway through the quarter, Byrd launched a nifty pass for an assist and then scored on three straight trips to expand the Chargers’ cushion from six to 12 points in less than a minute.

To its credit, Crawfordsville (2-3, 0-2) refused to fold. The Athenians gradually climbed back within six at the break, 27-21.

The third quarter was more of the same. Crawfordsville continued to shoot poorly, at one point falling to 9 of 32 for the game. Yet the Athenians outhustled North Montgomery for most of the period and kept the margin under 10.

That equilibrium ended with a 6-0 Charger run at the end of the period that made the lead 43-29 entering the fourth quarter – enough to turn the final period into a free throw shooting contest.

That was a competition North Montgomery welcomed. The Chargers were brilliant at the line, hitting 29 of 35 for the evening. Crawfordsville would never cut the margin below double digits again.

In addition to Byrd’s 27-point effort, North Montgomery got 20 markers from senior Clay Pierce in what was by far his best game of the year. Crawfordsville, which struggled to 17-of-53 shooting, was led by the 22 points of sophomore Trent Crabtree.

Before the game, Byrd was honored for becoming North Montgomery’s all-time career scoring leader during the Chargers’ game last week. He was presented with the game ball used in setting the record that had stood for over a decade.

By John Groth
Sports Editor

In his first varsity start, Nolan Harris showed what Crawfordsville boys basketball coach John Blackwell expected all along.

They’ve found another scoring leader. Maybe even an emotional one, too.

If the Athenians’ junior guard/forward can keep playing like this, they could finally start to turn the corner.

Harris
scored 15 points – all coming in the second half – but Crawfordsville
nearly went scoreless down the stretch and committed too many turnovers
in a 45-38 loss to visiting West Lafayette.

Blackwell acknowledged Harris has already likely earned himself another start in tonight’s game against South Putnam, too.

“Our
team was down. We finally got in our motion and found players to score.
I just happened to catch fire,” said Harris, who went 5-of-9 from the
field, including 2-of-6 from three-point range. “[Last week] Lebanon
had us down and beat us. This game we were down 10 in the huddle and we
said we had more heart than they did. We stepped up but fell short.”

Crawfordsville
(1-2) has now lost five-consecutive games against West Lafayette (3-2)
and hasn’t beaten the Red Devils since the 2003-04 season.

After another nightmare first-half, the Athenians found themselves down by just three.

In
last week’s game against Sagamore Athletic Conference rival Lebanon,
the Athenians went 12:30 in the middle two quarters with only one field
goal. They had the same problem in the second and third quarters
against the Red Devils, just in a shorter spurt.

This time, Crawfordsville went 7:13 over those two middle quarters without a field goal.

West
Lafayette senior guard Matt Lancaster scored eight-straight points –
including six consecutive to end the second quarter to give them a
17-14 halftimelead.

Behind Lancaster and sophomore guard
George Zhang (game-high 20 points), West Lafayette pushed its lead to
as large as 38-26 in the third quarter.

But that’s when Harris started finding his touch.

After
missing his first three shots (all three-pointers) in the first half,
Harris hit five of his next six baskets – including the final five.

Crawfordsville
rallied from that 12-point third-quarter deficit to tie the game at
33-33, then again at 36-36 with a three-pointer by sophomore Trent
Crabtree with 4:49 remaining in the fourth.

That’s the last basket the Athenians had the rest of the game.

Over the final 4:49, Crawfordsville scored just two points – coming on two free throws by Crabtree with 28.6 seconds remaining.

They did have scoring chances and other opportunities. But they couldn’t capitalize off any of them.

Shots
either spun out – like a couple of Crabtree’s three-pointers or senior
Jordan Boykin’s short inside shot to tie the game at 38-38 with 2:30
remaining.

Or they missed defensive assignments.

With
West Lafayette leading 38-36 with less than two minutes left and
playing keep away, the Red Devils found an opening in the
Crawfordsville’s defense.

Blackwell yelled at the Athenians’
defenders to drop down, but two quick passes led to an easy lay-up for
junior forward Zach Waters – his only points of the game – giving West
Lafayette a 40-36 lead with 1:08 left.

Or they committed turnovers.

After
cutting the deficit to just two on Crabtree’s free throws, the
Athenians had two- straight turnovers, including one off an inbounds
pass, in the final 30 seconds. Crawfordsville finished with 17
turnovers overall.

West Lafayette sealed the win from the
free-throw line, hitting 7-of-8 free-throw attempts in the final three
and a half minutes.

“We had a lot of unforced turnovers.
That’s the most frustrating thing,” Blackwell said. “West Lafayette is
a good team and their defense can give you fits. We gave away too many
unforced errors.”

B&GSW: Crawfordsville Sweeps Past Lebanon

Crawfordsville
continued a strong showing in Sagamore Conference swimming by downing Lebanon
in both boys and girls action Tuesday evening. The Athenian girls swept to a
115-69 victory, while the boys triumphed 112-72.

In girls’
action, Crawfordsville was led by Becca Howland and Missy Robinson who both
claimed victories in two events. Howland won the 200 Yard Freestyle and the 100
Yard Backstroke. Robinson staked claim to the 200 Yard IM and the 500 Yard
Freestyle.

On the boys’
side, no single swimmer won more than one event. Brett Linn captured the diving
competition. You will remember him from the Athenians state champion baseball
team last spring.
