Last season, the
Crawfordsville Athenians used a host of young talent to to win their
last six regular-season games and the sectional opener over West Vigo
before falling 31-14 to familiar conference foe Danville
in Round 2. Faced again with a tough regular-season schedule,
and a very difficult sectional, coach Rex Ryker has a realistic
outlook on what his team has to do.
“Our schedule does not allow for an
easy start,” Ryker said. “We must be ready now.”
Led by juniors Jordan
Standefer at quarterback and running back Craig Fairley, who ran for 1,825 yards last
season as a sophomore, the Athenians offense will be able to light it
up through the air and on the ground. On defense, Brett Linn and Brett
McKinney will hold the opponent’s air attack in check in the secondary.
The defense must replace all linebackers, however, as last year’s starters were
lost to graduation.
The bottom line?
“We have great talent but little depth,” Ryker said. “We must stay healthy.”
If
the Athenians can find a way to keep their key players off the DL, then
the Sagamore Conference championship trophy may end up in
Crawfordsville by season’s end.
