LINDEN
– Montgomery County track coaches were pleased with two things at
Friday night’s Charger Relays – strong efforts and picture-perfect
weather.

The field of 10 teams had ideal conditions to perform
in and several county athletes took advantage of the weather to record
personal bests.

Southmont won five overall events, with all five
coming on the girls side. Crawfordsville won three – all in the boys
meet – and North Montgomery won three, including the co-ed freight
train relay.

Southmont coach Marvin Walters watched his girls team rebound from an ominous start.

The
Mounties had to overcome some early adversity when they lost freshman
Kara Price to a foot injury in her first pole vault attempt of the
evening.

The injury forced Walters to re-arrange his personnel in some of the events.

“We
had to quickly shuffle our athletes after Kara was injured,” Walters
said. “But we had kids step up and do extremely well. Megan Arnold
jumped into two of Kara’s events and we still won them.”

Arnold also ran on Southmont’s winning sprint medley relay (1:55.1), along with Creasy Clauser, Shelby Harris and Allie Norris.

Besides
that relay, the Mounties took the 1,600 (Clauser, Harris, Kylie
Lippencott and Norris, 4:20.7) and the distance medley (Shelby Davis,
Dusty Lawton, Lippencott and Clauser, 10:00.5).

Kyra Burton and Morgan Fouty teamed together to win the high jump competition (9-feet).

Crawfordsville coach Brian Miller said although his girls team has only 11 members, he cannot fault their effort.

“I told the girls I was extremely proud of their effort tonight,” Miller said. “The girls just need numbers.”

But Crawfordsville’s boys had enough numbers to have the most success among their county counterparts.

One Athenian who had a tremendous meet was senior Jordan Boykin.

Boykin was a part of three champion relay teams.

He was a member of the winning 400-meter relay, 800-meter relay and the shuttle hurdle teams.

He
ran on the 800 relay team with Craig Fairley, Trace Cotten and Jim
Shelton and on the 1,600 relay with James Miller, Ronnie Myers and
Dustin McCloud.

Boykin said he enjoys big relay events like the Charger Relays and his school’s Athenian Relays.

“I
like running in big meets like this one,” he said. “You get to see good
competition and it also gives you an idea of some of the other teams
you will see down the road.”

North Montgomery’s boys teams won
two field events – with Ricky Langford and Jake Thomas teaming up to
win the long jump (37-4¾) and Zach Minchin and Matt Riddell taking the
pole vault (19-0).

Just as impressive, the Chargers earned the
co-ed freight train title with Clay Birdsong, Cody Stephens, Marie Long
and Cara McCauley finishing in 54.6 seconds.

“We had several
kids turn in personal bests,” North Montgomery coach Ed Stuffle said.
“We are seeing improvement in our kids and after tonight we are really
pleased with our team.
