WEST LAFAYETTE – There won’t be a long undefeated run for Crawfordsville High School’s softball team this year.
Crawfordsville
struggled defensively, committing five errors and suffered a 3-2
eight-inning loss at West Lafayette on Thursday afternoon.
It’s
a loss that left Athenians'(1-1) coach Brian Norris pretty disappointed
– even if they hadn’t played for a week and a half.
“We didn’t
hit. Their pitcher had nice little change-up that kept us off balance a
little bit,” he said. “I was disappointed with our hitting. We didn’t
hit many balls very hard. We should have done better. The first couple
innings looked like we hadn’t played in a week and a half, which we
hadn’t. I was OK with that and figured we’d get on her. But we didn’t.”
All three of West Lafayette’s (1-0) runs were unearned.
Trailing 2-1 after five innings, the Red Devils scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game.
Then, they won the game with a run in the bottom of the eighth.
The Athenians outhit the Red Devils 4-2, but their errors did them in.
“All
three of West Lafayette’s runs were unearned. That’s really
disappointing,” Norris said. “It wasn’t inexperienced players who made
errors. That’s the disappointing part.”
Junior pitcher Chelsea Day (0-1) took the loss.
Crawfordsville senior Stormy Staton had two RBI, while junior Ariel Hinton scored two runs.
Crawfordsville next plays April 14 in a home Sagamore Athletic Conference game against Tri-West.
Then, they the Athenians travel to Lizton to face the Bruins in an April 16 road game.
