GBB SECT. 25: 3A #6 Crawfordsville puts away North Montgomery, 57-39

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

THORNTOWN – Crawfordsville’s 57-39 victory Feb. 13 over North Montgomery did more than just advance the Class 3A sixth-ranked Athenians (20-2) into the championship game of Sectional 25 at Western Boone. It may have finally vanquished some very nasty demons.

Crawfordsville has been a very talented squad ever since seniors Mandi Johnson and Lexi Stevens arrived on the scene as freshmen. However, they have never won a sectional title. The reasons have varied, but the result has always been a disappointing ending to otherwise great seasons.

The demons surfaced again early in the fourth quarter of Friday’s game. North Montgomery was playing, arguably, its best game of the season. The Chargers had erased a nine-point halftime deficit and tied the game at 34 with a little over six minutes left to play.

Bad memories were hanging over the gymnasium like an eerie fog. It was, as they say, gut-check time.

It was then the Athenians, and their talented seniors, rose up and to slay far more than their Montgomery County neighbors. The sequence of events is definitely worth relating:

Johnson hit a jumper from the corner to put Crawfordsville back into the lead. Alex Gasaway created a steal and finished with a breakaway layup. Stevens stole the ball and hit two free throws at the other end. Betty Elliot got a steal, and Johnson turned it into two points. Stevens got another steal.

In less than two minutes, Crawfordsville ran off 12 unanswered points, removed all doubt as to the outcome of the game, and dispelled the demons from the premises.

The rest of the game was “The Lexi Stevens Show.” The Athenians’ emotional leader controlled the ball and drained 7 of 8 free throws down the stretch as Crawfordsville turned on the afterburners. It was a 23-5 onslaught over the final six minutes that produced the highly deceptive final score.

Johnson and Stevens combined to score 42 of Crawfordsville’s 57 points. Johnson led all scorers with 28 points on a sizzling 13-of-21 performance from the field. Stevens added 14, nine of them in the final quarter.

Nicole Kingma led the gallant Chargers (10-11) with 10 points.

Crawfordsville, which finished as Sagamore Conference champion at 7-0, had beaten North Montgomery twice earlier in the season: 56-37 in the Sugar Creek Classic on this floor Nov. 22, then again 62-41 at North Montgomery Dec. 19.

The victory sets up a showdown with Danville, a 54-26 winner over Southmont, in the title game.

In the night’s opening semifinal, Danville (10-10) advanced in far less-dramatic fashion as the Warriors downed Southmont 54-26 behind a dominating defensive effort. Danville held the Mounties to just one first-quarter field goal and eight first-half points in building a 15-point cushion at halftime.

The catalyst in that performance was senior point guard Molly Stewart. The 5’1” Stewart was, simply stated, a pest all over the court in the first half. She harassed Southmont ballhandlers, contested outlet passes on every Mounties rebound, ran the offense flawlessly at the Danville end, and generally made life miserable for Southmont.

The Mounties (10-11) did their best to mount a charge in the third quarter, but they simply could not cash in on their opportunities. (Southmont suffered through a dismal shooting performance the entire evening.) The lead was 16 at the end of three stanzas, and Danville capitalized on the necessary defensive risks the Mounties took in the fourth quarter

Liz Scott led Danville with 15 points, while Stewart added 11 points, five assists, and four rebounds. Elizabeth Sparks led Southmont, and all scorers, with 12 markers.

Crawfordsville, which also owns a pair of previous victories over Danville (54-42 at the Zionsville Tournament Dec. 29, then again two weeks later 60-41 at Danville), will be favored by three touchdowns in their third meeting, according to the Sagarin power ratings.

Hoosier Authority spoke with Crawfordsville Coach Darren Haas and with Danville’s Stewart after the games. Their comments are in the video players on this page!

DOVER – Darren Haas nearly kept Mandi Johnson on the bench for the entire third quarter.

After
his star senior forward started with a flat first half,
Crawfordsville’s girls basketball coach took her out and thought he’d
let her stew for awhile. The rest of his team was rolling along.

Midway through the period, she convinced him to change his mind.

Johnson took off her warm-up pants and told Haas she wanted to play.

She
found her inner aggressiveness, then wrapped up Crawfordsville’s
all-time career scoring mark and helped the Athenians move on in the
Indiana High School Athletic Association Western Boone Sectional.

Johnson
became Crawfordsville’s all time-career scoring leader with a
third-quarter free throw and she and junior Alex Gasaway tied for
team-high scoring honors with 17 points, as Class 3A No. 6
Crawfordsville routed Sagamore Athletic Conference rival Western Boone
67-47 in a first-round sectional win.

Johnson made only three
of nine shots but did most of her damage from the free-throw line,
hitting 11 of 12 attempts – all of which came in the second half. She
scored 13 of her 17 points in the final two quarters.

“Finally,”
said Johnson, who broke 1993 graduate Kari Fruits’ career mark of 1,132
points to climb atop Crawfordsville’s all-time scoring list. Johnson
entered the game six points from breaking Fruits’ mark and now has
1,144 total points. “My free throws were on and I was hitting them.
That was a good thing. I’m not sure if it sunk in yet. I feel
privileged to be able to do that. I’m very excited. It’s an honor,
really.”

Crawfordsville (19-2), which broke its single-season
school record for wins, advances to Friday’s sectional semifinals where
the Athenians will play county- and conference rival North Montgomery.

Crawfordsville
has played North Montgomery (10-10) twice this season, winning both
games – a 56-37 victory in the Nov. 22 Girls’ Sugar Creek Classic
championship game and 62-41 victory in a Dec. 19 regular-season meeting.

They’ll look to take care of them for a third time, just like they did Western Boone.

Keyed
by another hot-shooting and defensive-minded first quarter,
Crawfordsville disposed of Western Boone in a second consecutive
double-digit blowout.

Crawfordsville outscored Western Boone
15-4 in the first quarter, holding the Stars to just 1-of-9 shooting
and forcing them into seven turnovers.

It was the second
straight game the Athenians held the Stars to single digits in the
first quarter, after holding them to 0-of-13 shooting and two points
last Friday night.

Crawfordsville went on an 8-0 run to end
the first quarter and added another two points to start the second
quarter to build a 17-4 lead.

Gasaway scored five of the 10 points during the run, hitting a three-pointer and scoring off a put-back basket.

Junior Kylie Justus added a three and Johnson scored off a put-back.

The Athenians never let their lead drop to less than 10 points the rest of the game.

“Mentally, we came out with the attitude that no one can stop us,” Johnson said. “That’s what we went out and tried to do.”

Crawfordsville dominated the rebounding battle, finishing with 37 compared to Western Boone’s 24.

Gasaway had 11 of those for her third double-double in the team’s last four games, while Johnson added eight.

The
Athenians also kept Stars’ junior Brandy Woody from beating them,
keeping senior guard Lexi Stevens and junior guard Kylie Justus around
her throughout the game.

Although Woody scored a game-high 21
points, she hit just 7-of-19 field-goal attempts. Western Boone didn’t
have another player finish in double figures.

“Western Boone
is a team I have a lot of respect for because they do such a great job
because of Brandy Woody,” Haas said. “We tried to make them do things
they don’t want to do.”

Justus (12 points) and Stevens (11 points) did just as much offensively as they did defensively.

They combined for 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting and hit three of the Athenians’ four three-pointers.

Justus echoed Haas idea that their team defense was key.

“We
tried to keep control and not let them go where they want to go,” she
said. “We tried to keep them in one spot and keep control of our
defense. We worked together as a team.”

Sitting on a small pink and gray cooler, Mark Hesse watched Crawfordsville High School’s girls swim team celebrate.

His
hands covering his mouth, the Athenians’ swim coach still looked
incredulous at Crawfordsville’s latest Indiana High School Athletic
Association (IHSAA) sectional accomplishment.

What was
expected to be a close IHSAA Crawfordsville Sectional meet turned into
the Athenians’ record-breaking and dominating show Saturday afternoon.

The
Athenians won seven of 12 events, set three sectional records and won
their seventh-straight IHSAA Crawfordsville Sectional crown.

Crawfordsville scored 295 points, outdistancing runner-up Greencastle by 60, and never let its momentum slow down.

“I
was taking it all in,” said Hesse, who was named Coach of the Meet.
“You have an idea as a coach of what they’re capable of. You play out
scenarios. You play out the best case and the worst case in your head.
You see the girls every day. You have an idea but you never know if it
will come together. Everyone, all the girls – swimmers and divers –
they came to together and they erformed like champions.”

Crawfordsville’s run started with the meet’s opening event.

Its
200-yard medley relay team, of juniors Missy Robinson, Victoria
Fairfield, Becca Howland and freshman Shelby Conrad won the opening
event and finished in 1:50.69 – a school record and State cutoff time.

Fairfield
added a win in the 200 freestyle and Robinson placed second – and hit a
State cutoff time in the 200 individual medley.

With
Greencastle closing in after the 50 freestyle, the Athenians’ diving
trio of senior Bekah Simmons, freshman Calli Patton and junior Samantha
Morgan finished first, third and fourth in the event to pull them way
out in front.

They shaved diving coach Dave Whitehead’s head in celebration soon after.

Fairfield
scored another win in the 100 butterfly, Howland added one in the 500
freestyle and the Athenians closed out the meet winning two of the
final four events, including the 200 freestyle relay where they tied
the sectional and pool record (1:41.61) with Southmont’s relay from
2002.

“I’d be lying to you if I said I saw this coming,” Hese
said. “This is great. But it’s what we’re supposed to do. Now we go to
the [IUPUI] Natatorium – us, county swimmers, Greencastle swimmers –
and all need to go down there and represent this part of the state.”

Robinson
advanced to the State finals in both her events – winning the 100-yard
breaststroke with a school, pool and IHSAA Crawfordsville Sectional
record time of 1:03.80 and finishing second and making a State finals
cut in the 200 individual medley.

For Robinson, it was all about the team.

She
wasn’t planning on wearing her fast suit for the 100 breaststroke, but
Hesse wanted her to wear it for the 200 freestyle relay and she didn’t
have enough time to change and switch suits.

Robinson put up
another astounding 100 breaststroke time, and it marked the second time
in three days she’d broken her previous record set last season.

“I’m
not even fully tapered,” said Robinson, who won the event for the
second-straight year. “I’m not shaved. It’s going to go way down . . .
I’m going for 1:02.”

Records were shattered throughout the meet, not only by Crawfordsville but by other Montgomery County schools.

County
rivals Southmont (185) and North Montgomery (166) finished third and
fourth, but will each have at least one swimmer headed to next
weekend’s State finals.

Southmont senior Hilary Mishler won
and set sectional records in both her events, including shattering a
31-year-old pool mark in the 200-yard individual medley.

North Montgomery senior Emily McIlrath broke two school records and will head to the State finals in two individual events.

Mishler
was a nervous wreck throughout the week, worrying about whether she
could hit her best times and reaching her goals. Turned out, she had no
problems.

Mishler finished the 200 individual medley in 2:07.84,
shattering Christine Inman’s sectional record of 2:10.25 set in 2004
and the long-standing pool mark of 2:12.27 set by Crawfordsville’s
Sally Johnson in 1978.

Then, in the 100 backstroke, Mishler
eeked out a win, finishing in 56.58 seconds – just .15 seconds better
than Greencastle senior Kelsey Murtagh.

Mishler’s time broke
Murtagh’s sectional record (58.41 seconds) set last year and Jenny
Connolly’s pool record of 56.61 seconds in 2006.

Murtagh beat Mishler in the event last year, but Mishler vowed it wasn’t going to happen again.

“I
didn’t ever imagine I’d be anywhere this close [to the record],”
Mishler said. “I saw Kelsey there and I was not going to let her beat
me no matter what happened.”

Mishler will have teammates at the State finals with her for the first time in three years.

She
swam on the Mounties’ winning 400 freestyle relay (3:51.45), along with
seniors Abby Dove and April Detro and freshman Victoria Burkhart.

Southmont coach Kevin Hedrick couldn’t have been happier.

“Hilary
really, really stepped up good,” he said. “She exceeded all
expectations for [Saturday]. We’re really, really excited about next
week . . . After seeing Kelsey swim as fast as she did in the 100
[freestyle], I knew it was going to take a 57 to beat her. Last year,
Hilary was sick. This year, she was really on her game.”

McIlrath performed just as well.

She finished second in both her events – the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly but advanced to State in both.

McIlrath
set a school record in the 100 breaststroke, finishing second behind
Robinson in 1:05.44, and also advanced in the 100 butterfly (58.92
seconds).

“[Missy] gave me a good race, which is all I need,”
said McIlrath, who will swim at State for the second-straight year.
“I’m thankful to have her to race against like that. I didn’t think I’d
get a 1:05. I would have been happy with a 1:07.”

W: Southmont’s Hodges one of three Sagamore wrestlers to claim regional crown

Three
Sagamore Conference wrestlers claimed regional championships Saturday. The trio
was part of 16 wrestlers from SAC schools who qualified for semi-state
competition next Saturday The champions include Southmont’s Nick Hodges who won
the 189 lb. class at the North Montgomery Regional. That is, of course, no
surprise. Hodges is one of the favorites for the state title at that weight. He
was joined on the top step of the awards platform by Josh Julian of Lebanon who
won the 112 lb. weight class. At Mooresville, Ryan Kolb of Tri-West won the 152
lb. title.

Overall, Southmont and Lebanon led the way for
Sagamore schools. Both the Mounties and Tigers advanced four wrestlers to next
week. Crawfordsville advanced three wrestlers and every other school in the
conference advanced one wrestler to semi-state competition.

GBB: Crawfordsville ready to finish the job this time around

Mike McGraw

Hoosier Authority

Sectional
play begins Tuesday evening at three sites that contain Sagamore schools in the
field. Of course, the biggest of those is Western Boone where all six teams are
members of the SAC. Meanwhile, Frankfort travels to Benton Central for tourney
play and Tri-West is in the 2A sectional at Speedway.

Crawfordsville
is the clear favorite at Western Boone. Unlike last season, the Athenians
appear to be heading into the tourney at the top of their game. It won’t take
long to find out. Crawfordsville will play its biggest challenger, Western
Boone, in the opening round. The Stars took the Athenians to the wire in a
regular season game in December. Lebanon is also headed into the tourney
playing well. The Tigers will face Southmont in the opening round. Look for
Crawfordsville and Lebanon to meet in the final of this one. Hoosier Authority predicts
Crawfordsville will fulfill its destiny this time around.

Frankfort
has a tough opening assignment against Twin Lakes. An upset here is not out of
the question. However, don’t look for the Hot Dogs to be able to pull any
miracles against the host Bison later in the tourney. Meanwhile Tri-West drew
into the other half of the bracket from host Speedway. The Bruins could easily
find themselves in the final. Look for Speedway to put an end to their run at that
point.
