LAFAYETTE
– Thanks to a thrilling comeback win over Lafayette Jeff in their final
match, Crawfordsville’s wrestling team earned a third-place finish
Wednesday in the Lafayette Jeff Holiday Duals.

Crawfordsville
finished 7-2, winning all five of its matches Tuesday and picked up
victories over Seeger (45-30) and Lafayette Jeff (36-35) on Wednesday.

Both
of the Athenians’ losses came to state-ranked teams in New Castle
(47-24) and Westfield (43-29). New Castle won the tournament with a 9-0
record.

Crawfordsville defeated Pioneer; North Newton; Hanover Central; Cascade; and Kankakee Valley on Tuesday.

“Our
guys showed a lot of guts,” Crawfordsville coach Chris Ervin said in an
e-mail. “The big come-from-behind win over Lafayette Jeff was an
excellent way to finish the tournament. That was probably the most
exciting win that we’ve had since I’ve been coaching This was great
competition for us and will hopefully be a springboard into the last
half of the season.”

Senior Chaz Brock finished as
Crawfordsville’s lone undefeated wrestler, going 9-0 at 189 pounds –
recording six wins by pin and three wins by forfeit.

He also
recorded his 100th career win with a victory over a Cascade opponent,
becoming the fourth wrestler in Crawfordsville history to reach the
mark. He now has 105 overall wins.

Junior Briar Perkins (112)
went 8-1, with his only loss coming to No. 3-ranked Conner Mullins (New
Castle) and junior Craig Fairley (160) also went 8-1, with his only
loss coming to New Castle’s Von Wasson.

Brock and Perkins moved their season records to 22-1, while Fairley is now 19-4.

Junior
Dylan McBride (Hvt.) and junior Nick Baker (145) each went 7-2, while
sophomore Shane Cullen (171) and freshman Hudson Miller (125) each
finished 6-3.

Crawfordsville also pulled off a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Lafayette Jeff in its final match to nab third-place.

Down 35-19 with only three matches left, the Athenians rallied for an exciting win.

Fairley picked up a technical fall victory, then sophomore Shane Cullen (171) and Brock each earned pins to seal the 36-35 win.
