NEW
MARKET – Crawfordsville High School boys track coach Brian Miller admits he
didn’t know if Jim Caraher had this type of speed in him.

But after
Friday night, Miller and the Athenians’ – and all of Montgomery County – sure
realize that now.

The quiet, Crawfordsville senior redhead blazed up the
Southmont High School track – scoring three come-from-behind wins and leading
the Athenians to a county track meet title.

Caraher won the 800- and
1,600-meter races, along with anchoring the final leg of the Athenians’
first-place 1,600 relay team as Crawfordsville won Friday night’s Montgomery
County track meet at Southmont, ending the Mounties’ seven-year championship
reign.

Behind Caraher and junior Trace Cotten (who won both the 110 high
and 300 intermediate hurdles races), the Athenians scored 71 points, well ahead
of Southmont’s 48 and North Montgomery’s 45.

“Jim Caraher is starting to
make a believer out of me,” Miller said. “He can do anything if he keeps this
going. He’s up for academic all-state . . . That’s the character of the guys on
the team. We have high character kids.”

Caraher won two thrilling
middle-distance races, then capped his and Crawfordsville’s night with a
come-from-behind final leg win in the 1,600 relay.

After trailing
Southmont senior Daniel Bennett in the 1,600, Caraher turned on the jets in the
final lap to overtake him, finishing in 4:48.9 and winning by just over three
seconds.

Then, he did the same to North Montgomery freshman Matthew Bane
in the 800 and 1,600 relay. Trailing in the final ¼ lap of the 800, Caraher
zoomed past a worn-out Bane and won the race by just under a second. He finished
in 2:01.3, while Bane was second in 2:02.2

“I thought (Bane) had me beat
until the last quarter lap,” Caraher said. “I knew I had to speed up if I was
going to beat him. I didn’t know if I could. I don’t know where it comes
from.”

Caraher did the same in the 1,600 relay, passing Bane with half a
lap to go and giving Crawfordsville the final event win. The Athenians finished
the relay in 3:37.2, while North Montgomery was second in 3:39.7.

Cotten
won both hurdles races, finishing the 110 high hurdles in 15 seconds and edging
out senior teammate Cory Yund by seven tenths of a second.

Then, in the
300 intermediate hurdles, he, like Caraher, earned a come-from-behind win –
passing Southmont junior Patrick Posthauer late and winning the race by three
tenths of a second (40.8 to 41.1 seconds).

Cotten acknowledged the
Athenians’ fans and his years of dance classes have helped him. He already set
Crawfordsville’s school record in the 110 high hurdles this year.

“I took
lessons in ballet, jazz and tap from second to seventh grade,” he said. “I still
dance in my spare time, if I can. It gives me an advantage in my
flexibility.”

Crawfordsville had two other individual winners. Sophomore
Craig Fairley beat out junior teammate Jordan Boykin in the 200, winning in 23.2
seconds and senior Andrew Totheroh won the shot put (43 feet, 9
inches).

Southmont couldn’t overcome the losses of seniors Kevin Hull and
Jason Hull (who are no longer on the team) and also had sophomore Jordan Burkett
miss most of the meet because of a virus.

Senior Clayton Burton won the
500 (52.3 seconds) and Bennett took the 3,200 easily (10:41.2), while freshman
Jonathan Christensen won the high jump (6-2), defeating Boykin (6-0) – the
defending champ.

The Mounties also earned wins in the 400 and 3,200
relays. But it wasn’t enough to contend with the Athenians.

“We were
hoping the boys could do a little bit better. We had some guys sick and injured
and not up to par,” Southmont coach Marvin Walters said. “Crawfordsville was
loaded for bear. I still think we a shot at conference.”

North Montgomery
freshman Elijah Webster keyed the Chargers’ run. He won the 100 – zipping past
Fairley by a tenth of a second – and the long jump (18-11).

North
Montgomery also was strong in the field events, with senior Nathan Dale taking
the discus (123-3) and junior Zach Minchin winning the pole vault
(10-6).

“Elijah Webster went very fast,” Chargers’ coach Cassie Hunt
said. “All the coaches thought he performed well. He’s going to be a good one in
the future.”

Crawfordsville, Southmont and North Montgomery next compete
Friday in the Sagamore Athletic Conference meet at Danville.

DANVILLE
– Just when Crawfordsville High School’s baseball team had started rolling
along, the Athenians’ committed a Sagamore Athletic Conference
gaffe.

They committed seven errors, including one in the bottom of the
eighth inning, that let conference rival Danville slip past for a 6-5 victory
Thursday night.

After rallying back from a 5-2 deficit to tie the game at
5-5, Class 3A co-No. 5 Crawfordsville (14-3) let the game come apart in extra
innings.

Senior Cameron Hobson (2-1) came on in the seventh inning and
threw two wild pitches in the final two innings and the Warriors capitalized on
an Athenians’ error in the eighth inning, later scoring on an RBI bunt.

Crawfordsville junior Brett McKinney had two hits, including a double,
and two RBI. Junior Brett Linn also had two hits (a triple and a single) and an
RBI.

Senior Cody Dowell pitched four innings for the Athenians, striking
out six while walking only one. He allowed just two hits and two runs scored.

Crawfordsville next plays at 7 p.m. today at home against North
Putnam.
