Hoosier Authority talked with Gasaway and Thompson after the game. Their comments will be available on both the state and Sagamore Conference video players. Gasaway finished the game with 22 points. They were scored in a span of seventeen minutes. Thompson added 17 points to go along with her leadership. Frankfort put three players in double figures.

In a game marked by huge momentum swings, one thing remained
constant Friday, Saturday, January 19^th when Crawfordsville traveled
to Southmont. The Athenians shot the ball incredibly well. The result was a
69-58 victory over the Mounties.

Crawfordsville lost little time grabbing the advantage in
this one. The Athenians raced to a 7-0 advantage in the first two minutes of
the game. They used the momentum from that start and blazing first quarter
shooting to hold a 21-11 lead at the end of one period.

This Southmont team though, has shown repeatedly through the
season that they are a scrappy bunch. The Mounties dominated the second quarter
of play, whittling away at the early Athenian advantage. The Mounties finally
tied the game at 32 in the final seconds of the half only to have, only to have
Crawfordsville’s Tyler Whittington put a dagger in their heart at the buzzer
with a long three pointer. The Athenians went into halftime with nearly all of
their lead gone but the momentum suddenly back on their side.

Crawfordsville continued to scorch the nets in the third
period. Southmont, however, stubbornly refused to fold. The Mounties stayed
within hailing distance, trailing only 45-42 with two minutes remaining in the
quarter. It was then that Crawfordsville went on the game’s decisive run. The
Athenians closed the quarter on an 8-2 run to take a 53-44 advantage into the
fourth.

The fourth quarter was an intense uphill struggle for
Southmont. They repeatedly gave themselves chances to get back into the game
with their defensive effort. However, each time Crawfordsville would respond
with their weapon of the night—exceptional shooting. Eventually the Athenians
claimed the 69-58 verdict.

Try this on for size. For the game, Crawfordsville shot
26-40 from the field. That folks, is 65%. Jared Lindsy pace the visitors with
18 points while Whittington added 17. That duo offset the 25 point explosion of
Tyler Price for the Mounties.

They are all tough in the Sagamore Conference. That is the
lesson Crawfordsville learned Saturday, January 19^th in their trip
to Southmont. Coming off of perhaps their worst performance of the year the
evening before against Frankfort,
the Mounties played inspired  basketball
and nearly pulled an upset of the state ranked Athenians. In the end,
Crawfordsville did what great teams do—they made big plays at clutch time. As
a result, they escaped with a 57-45 victory.

Things started off quietly enough. Crawfordsville jumped to
a 10-4 lead midway through the first quarter. However, Southmont established
early that the game was going to be played at their tempo. They also totally
controlled the boards and the two factors combined for a 7-0 Mounties run at
the end of the quarter and an 11-10 lead after one period.

The second period was an extremely entertaining battle of
wills. Crawfordsville stepped up their defensive intensity while Southmont
refused to let go of their superiority on the backboards. For most of the
period, both teams struggled to dent the scoreboard. The game was deadlocked at
17 with two and a half minutes left in the half. Finally, the Athenians defense
forced a crack in the Mounties composure. Two fast break opportunities,
including one remarkable finish by sophomore Alex Gasaway, fueled a 10-3 run to
end the half. At intermission it appeared Crawfordsville had righted the ship
as they led 27-20.

Appearances can be deceiving. Southmont came out of the
locker room with their jaws locked and immediately went on a 12-5 run, tying
the game at 32. The remainder of the period was an epic battle. It ended in a
stalemate. The teams entered the fourth tied at 38.

They continued to battle into the opening minutes of the fourth
quarter. Two minutes into the final period, Crawfordsville clung to a scant
42-41 advantage. Then came the key period of the contest. Southmont found
itself in deep foul trouble and was forced to juggle the lineup in an effort to
keep people in the game. The Athenians took advantage and struck for a 7-0 run
that pushed the lead to eight. Even at that, Southmont nearly refused to let
them get away. The Mounties suffered through two in and out three point attempts
during the key stretch.

With their lead reestablished, Crawfordsville put the game
away from the free throw line. The Athenians went 8-8 from the stripe down the
stretch. After the game, Crawfordsville coach Darrin Haas was generous in his

Gasaway led the Athenians offense with an outstanding 22
point effort. The Mounties were led by the inspired play of Brooke McGaughey
who finished with 16 points.

new meet records were: Jeanee Coy of Westfield in the 200 yard
freestyle, Megan Gallagher of McCutcheon in the 500 yard freestyle,
Hilary Mishler of Southmont in the 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard
backstroke, and Westfield’s 400 yard freestyle relay team.  Coy’s time
of 1:55.17 in the 200 free was also a new pool record.

LIZTON – Whatever Crawfordsville head coach Darren Haas did at practice between December 29 and January 2 is something he should continue doing for the foreseeable future.

Coming off a lackluster performance at the Benton Central Tournament on December 28 that saw the Athenians score 46 and 49 points respectively, Crawfordsville torched the nets at Tri-West High School on Jan. 3 en route to a 82-47 dismantling of the Bruins.

“It was good to get back at it again,” Haas said.  “We didn’t play real well in the Benton Central tournament.  It was good to bounce back and play well and shoot the ball well tonight.”

The Athenians torched the nets to the tune of shooting 29-55 from the floor (53%) as they placed five players in double figures and had one more miss the double-digit plateau by only one point.  In three of the four quarters, Crawfordsville scored 20 or more points.  The one quarter they didn’t was the fourth quarter when they scored 18 points.

Even better for Haas was he was able to stay undefeated against his former coach, Tri-West head coach Brad Acton.  Oh yeah, Crawfordsville was also playing without the services of senior Paige Thompson.

This game was not close from the beginning when Crawfordsville opened the game on a 9-0 run.  At the end of the first quarter, Crawfordsville had pushed their lead to 12 points, 20-8.

Crawfordsville started the second quarter on an 8-0 run that saw them push the lead 27-8 with 5:45 left in the half.  Not matter what Tri-West tried, nothing seemed to work against a Crawfordsville that rarely missed.  In fact, when they did miss, they sometimes got an offensive rebound and scored.  

At the 2:16 mark, the Athenians got a layup from Holly Thompson that pushed the lead to 23 points, 39-16.  At the intermission, Crawfordsville had a comfortable 19 point lead, 44-25.  Leading the second quarter surge was Mandi Johnson and Alex Gasaway with six points each in the second quarter.

The start of the third quarter signified how the entire game was for the Bruins.  Tri-West had three turnovers on their first three possessions.  On the other hand, Crawfordsville scored the first six points of the quarter to push their lead to 25 points, 50-25.  

After two straight buckets by Tri-West, the Athenians went on an 8-0 run to cap a 14-4 run, pushing the lead to 58-29.  Crawfordsville put the finishing touches on the quarter by getting a layup at the buzzer by Lexi Stevens on a three-quarter court pass from Mandi Johnson.  After three quarters, the Athenians led 64-35.

The fourth quarter came and went with Crawfordsville unloading the bench to get others playing time.  In the end, Crawfordsville walked away with the 82-47 win.  

“The key is our inside-outside game,” Haas said.  “If our outside shots are going down, then our team is going to be clicking because our inside game is going to work.”

“If they pack it win we have to hit the outside shot and we did that tonight.”

The loss drops Tri-West to 4-7 on the season and 1-4 in Sagamore Conference play.  Next up for the Bruins is a trip to Sheridan on Jan. 5 to take on the Blackhawks.

With the win, Crawfordsville has now won 11 games in a row and improves to 14-1 on the season and 3-0 in Sagamore Conference play.  Leading the way was Gasaway with 17 points.  Also in double figures was Johnson with 14 points, Hannah Fink with 13 points, Cara Clarke with 12 points, and Lexi Stephens with 11 points.  

Next up for the Athenians is a conference home game on Jan. 8 against Danville, a team they beat 46-36 at the Benton Central Tournament on Dec. 27.

“We’re 14-1, kind of on a roll here,” Haas said.  “We are starting to see some things and we are trying to prepare the best we can and I feel like we are really starting to hit on all strides.”
