BB&GBB: Sagamore hardwood races heading to the finish line

We are
heading down the home stretch in the Sagamore basketball races and we thought
it was time to break down the chases just a bit. Let’s start with the gilts.

It looks for
all the world as though this race is going to boil down once again to the
battle between Crawfordsville and Western Boone in the last week of the season.
Both squads are undefeated in league play and hold at least a two game lead on
the remainder of the conference. Western Boone won the preliminary bout with a
50-49 victory in the Sugar Creek Classic early in the year. Keep in mind, the
contest at the end of the season is only round two. These foes are likely to
meet again in sectional competition.

Crawfordsville
faces an additional hurdle in the league. They stand 3-0 in Sagamore play while
WeBo is 4-0. The difference is that the Stars survived a tough battle with
Tri-West and the Athenians face that test this week. The Bruins are 10-3 overall
and 2-2 in league play. That means they are the only other team in the league
with an outside chance of capturing the crown. Look for this to be a war.

We should
take a minute to mention Lebanon in this discussion. The Tigers have two
conference losses and they are to the frontrunners, so a championship is very
unlikely. However, Lebanon has improved drastically as the season has
progressed and they play an extremely tough schedule. Look for the Tigers to be
a factor cone tourney time.

The boys’
race no longer holds any great suspense. Danville dismantled North Montgomery
Friday night and that gives the Warriors a one game lead over the field.
Danville’s remaining games are against Western Boone and Crawfordsville,
neither of whom has won a league contest, and Frankfort. The battle with the
Hot Dogs holds a little intrigue. Frankfort has only played two Sagamore games
thus far and is 1-1. That means they have the best chance on paper to contend
with the Warriors. That challenge is likely to be on paper only. Danville is a
legitimate state title threat in 3A and nobody is looking at Frankfort in that
vein.
